Timshel - DAY 2

24hrs 1300 - 1300 distance logged 141.3. Strangely close to yesterday's total. A nice beam reach in SE wind turned back to a run in NE, so we gathered the resolve to set up the pole, always a trial with lots of bits of rope to sort, and the big metal thing to handle, all on the rolling deck. Guess we may get better at it this trip. In fact as soon as yankee was set on the pole goosewinged with preventer on the main, the boat became much steadier, when the wind came up it was better still and we ran like that all night at a good speed (for us). Our cutter rig is not the most efficient for this point of sail as the yankee is much smaller than a genoa and due to the forward lowers you can't get the pole out far enough back to even set all of the yankee. Maybe we should have protested about our handicap rating which undoubtedly does not take into account our cutter rig and looks as though we should be much faster than we are, but we had better things to do getting ready. Not so many other boats about, but had to alter course for multihull First Step as cpa was uncomfortably close. In the morning also set the staysail. Faithfully doing Jerrys 3 min rig checks (actually it takes longer than that), just as well as found a split pin missing from gooseneck on boom (that had just been renewed before we left). Steve still getting into the SSB skeds, more mysterious hissing and disembodied voices. I was wondering if it was a boy thing, but today's v efficient net controller was a lady from Vitamina. Changed over chart cartridge to the African one for Cape Verde but still a long way to go. Steve made a great supper using the first of the meat from the meat lady in Las Palmas, but we are having difficulty identifying our citrus fruit and it became orange chicken rather than lemon - we have very yellow oranges that look like lemons and also huge ones that look like grapefruit.
