Gozwoz - Day 2 in Horta

The Navigator having partially recovered from his celebratory hangover, the crew ate last night in the restaurant of Genuino, the first Portuguese to have sailed around the world single-handed. Unfortunately his skills fell short of what was expected in the timeliness of the service, though the food was good and the view splendid.

Last night a front passed over and there was a strong wind blowing over the stern. The Coxswain and the Navigator, who occupy the forward cabins and have grown accustomed to a bouncy and a noisy ride, were moved to derision on hearing complaints from the afterguard, the Bosun and Roger, about the sound of gentle wavelets against the stern.

The Bosun's run of bad luck continued today when, instead of putting his shirt in the sink to soak, he set it on fire! I wonder sometimes whether our dependence on him as a resourceful man is misplaced.

This afternoon we have a bus tour of the island, which only seems a few miles across, followed by a reception and prize-giving. Tomorrow we leave at 0600h on a 70 NM day sail to the next island, Terceira.
