Luna Quest - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 29.5.15

Position: 18.39S 173.59W

Since Tuesday, we have had an avalanche of squalls, making our passage to Vava’u, Tonga, very frustrating, but late Tuesday evening the wind and rain kicked in seriously with a strong breeze from the Southeast. The breeze forbade a good sail as we would have made too much speed to make landfall in daylight hours on Wednesday. We took in as much sail as we dared without losing direction. It was a tricky balance that required constant attention in the driving rain. Very little sleep was had, but many soakings. When daylight appeared we were only about 7 miles off and could just about make out the outlines of Vava'u in between curtains of rain. As we approached the island, we noticed two more World ARC fleet yachts coming from the Niue direction. Together we sailed round the top of the island when the weather improved a little to reach a point where landfall could begin under engine. Another 8 miles of weaving around islets and rocks to make landfall at around 11.30am. We were truly exhausted.

There will be no blog now until we set sail again on Monday 8th June.

Eric
