Luna Quest - Sunday, 24 May, 2015

Noon Position: 16.53S 169.47W

Daily run: uncertain; est. 120 miles (cross over charts and unreliable log reader)

The wind backed yesterday from south east to east so that we could no longer sustain our goose-winged sail configuration. The rough seas in the strong winds nearly jibed the boat and if that had happened we might well have had a few breakages. As the night was upon us, we took down the mainsail and just carried on with the one poled out and reefed Genoa (jenny). Our progress diminished dramatically while the boat began to roll in the rough seas, but there was nothing we could do about it other than suffer the ignominious rocking and rolling, all night. Sleep was difficult to come by as one’s body and head were rolled from side to side with much clattering and banging of items not securely tied.

This morning the seas seem to have calmed down a little making the rolling a bearable feature of our lives. We have put out the staysail on the inner forestay to give the boat more speed and a better balance. The sky is overcast and there is little hope of the batteries being recharged without the help of the Honda generator. It is purring away in the cockpit. We shall keep it on for an hour and measure the results. Julia is back on her computer creating short iMovies.
