Gozwoz - Day 1 from Bermuda

The day started well in that we managed to get away from the quay where we had spent a night without further damage to the Bosun. As we prepared for the start of the leg, however, we noticed a tear in the genoa which needed immediate repair. In consequence after crossing the start line we made straight for the town quay. Thanks to prompt work by Ocean Sails we were away again within two hours. Apart from a brief try with the cruising chute which resulted in the sort of "SNAFU" associated with that sail, we have been running down wind with a poled out genoa and are hopefully gaining on the slower boats. The Navigator has deservedly been the butt of Our Great Leader's scorn over his uncertainty as to the accuracy of the great circle track provided by the software from the App Store which appeared to be at odds with the course indicated by our various GPS instruments. Fortunately the Coxswain both worked out the answer to the problem, namely that the GPS instruments give the course for the great circle route and not the Rhumb line, and provided a proof of his conclusion. Truly a man whom Euclid and Pythagoras would have admired. As usual we dined on sandwiches made before departure by Roger washed down with the sailor's standby, cup-a-soup, and look forward to a steady night.
