Rhumb - Log Day 10

It was not to be I guess. Despite our new autohelm drive, over the past few days we have experienced an ever increasing incidence of the autopilot not holding a course and dropping out conpletely. We have managed this by re-engaging it each time, but following a tedious downwind run today where it was continuously losing its fix, we seriously began losing confidence in the system and the thought of continuing further out into the big blue yonder was cause for grave concern. Inevitably, we took the only sensible decision possible and headed back to the Canaries - not sure whether it will be Tenerife or Gran Canaria as yet.

So there we have it, our ARC adventure is over and we are desperately disappointed it has ended in such a way, but thankful that we have taken a decision which ensures crew safety - this is some comfort.

On a personal note, I experienced what was one of the most magical 2 hours ever whilst on watch between 2 and 4 am this morning. On my own on deck, enjoying a good sail, moon shining bright in a clear sky, listening to Miss Saigon, thinking of home, family and friends, and accompanied by at least three dolphins for a time. Looking aft at times it was mesmerising to see the swells sweeping up behind and a one point the Plough seemed to be just above the top of the swell. Was I a lucky chappie of what, and a great memory too take home.

Once again, to all who have followed us with continued interest and messages of support we thank you very much, your words of encouragement in our adversities have been very much appreciated and a stimulus to get the job done. Sadly though, and I will end as I started - it was not to be.

Rhumb over - John, Brian and Ian.
