Vagaris - Goat's cheese and shower day

Today was our 4th day at sea and we're getting nicely settled into a routine of watches, sleep, sail changes, food and maintenance jobs. I must say, I haven't been bored yet or had time to kick back, do nothing and read a book as they promised...

Today for lunch we had goats cheese and pear bruschetta with parma ham and toasted pine nuts. For supper Jax and Kath cooked Italian vegetable bake with aubergines, courgettes, tomatoes, mozzarella on a bed of onions. Strangely they forgot to add the meat layer - oh well... Good effort anyway.

Due to it getting dark at 1730 our time, we've been eating quite late about 1830 and clearing up by around 1900. Most yachts recommend eating earlier before it gets dark, but that doesn't leave much time after lunch for us, so whilst the conditions are benign we'll carry on like this.

I've been busy with a few boat maintenance jobs. Nothing major, but there's always things to do. Last night I was upside down in the bilge adding a couple of stop valves either side of the fridge cooling water filter to enable me to remove the filter to clean it whilst at sea without water gushing everywhere with the boar's motion. Being at sea has caused the filter to pick up more small bits of calcium and aluminium sludge from the tanks, so I'm having to clean it daily.

We've also been performing daily rig checks and looking for chafe and wear. We've been sailing about half and half between gennaker and genoa, so today had a bit of chafe on the gennaker halyard to sort out.

Jax and Kath also found time to take a water sample for the marine microplastics project many ARC yachts are assisting with by taking samples as they cross the Atlantic.

Oh yes, today was shower day. It was nice and sunny this morning so we each took it in turn to have a frugal and quick deck shower - after which we all felt much more human.

Adrian
