Friskus VI - Friskuslog day 12

Challenger 3 - CF361 CH2 Arc 2015 Friday 4 December

Friday 4th DecemberRace Day 12The Night of the Long Squalls-strong winds and little sleepThe day started with some strong winds that would continue to grow throughout the day. Much to Kirsty’s dismay, a top speed challenge was introduced just as she headed below deck for her day, alongside Jerry, on Mother Watch. Mark set the bar within the Starboard Watch, to be trumped first by Ricky with 13.9 and then Rosie with 14.7 knots. However, Steve quickly wiped the smug grin off Rosie’s face with a whopping 16.8 knots, perfectly timing a gust and wave in order to surf into the lead. This was not beaten and sets a hard task to match! The day was slightly cloudy although very warm and muggy. A hidden sun allowed the crew members off-watch to go about some chores. Washing continually emerged from. read more...

Hera - Handwerker an Bord

Stefan. read more...

Chanto - 2nd Week

Chanto Blog - 2nd WeekThe second week saw a continued move south with the aim of capturing the stronger winds that had been eluding us for a few days. The tactic appears to have paid off as we're now pushing along at 8.5 knots having just completed our most profitable 24 hours of the crossing so far covering close to 190 miles! We've continued predominantly with the twin head sail set up which has meant most nights we've avoided the need to reef down. With impeccable timing the fishing took a decidedly more positive turn. With hours to go until the half way mark to St Lucia was crossed, and following a fruitless 2 days up until that point, the addition of a second lure paid immediate dividends with not one but two Mahi Mahi secured!Once on board they weighed in at a mighty 4.5 and 5 kilos. read more...

Magic - MAGIC May Blog Friday 4th December

May BlogFriday 4th DecemberWeirdy Address16.40.7N   46.17.62Well my weather forecasting was right – it is rough.  The boat is twisting and turning like a corkscrew.  It is funny to watch the feeders try to get their balance as they only have two feet.  I am doing well with the balance – it is simple you just lean into the movement and stay grounded.  I had a shower today - I think I am the only one who did.  Mark and Tina are disappointed that the new Water maker that they had fitted for the ARC doesn’t work when it is rolling – which is pretty much always!  The ‘experts’ Marine Maintenance who fitted the Water maker and the Generator in Gibraltar didn’t fit either properly so they suck up air. That’s why the Generator needed a new black wheelie. read more...

As the wind pushes over 25knots things start go awry as the 30 tonnes of yacht will not accelerate andplane (see Sunfast 3200, J105 ......or Boomerang!). Albatros - Dec. 3 at 9:14 pm

If I count correctly this is our twelfth day at sea. Wind has picked up further during the day, and we were making 9-10kn all day, sometimes even 12. 729 nautical miles to Saint Lucia, and the distance is quickly going down. A good feeling after the days of almost no wind and slow progress. Today we had a whale visit us, gliding with us through the water and occasionally diving under our vessel only to appear again on the other side. It was with us for 10, maybe 15 minutes before we lost sight. Very nice. No boats sighted in the last 24 hours at least, so any distraction is welcome.Mites baked fresh bread today, it was delicious, served with Italian salami donated by our very own on-board Italian-of-choice Christine. Certainly beat the prepackaged salami normally served on board the. read more...

Skyelark of London - Day 11

DAY 11OK everybody, For today's entertainment, we have caught 2 more Dorados, now the fish hooks have been changed, the blighters are not escaping as easy as they were before!I had my first filleting experience of the larger caught Dorado and I think we are all agreed I need more training! We had this afternoon, a pod of whales, which were very close to the boat but travelling in the opposite direction to us, very exciting. We are now down to 1000 miles until we reach St Lucia, so a sweepstake is being set up to find the closest time for us to pass the way point position just north of St Lucia, and the winner gets the glory of steering Skyelark across the finish line!We have enjoyed fast sailing today so our arrival may be sooner then we all think, or not, who knows?????Thanks to Mike and. read more...

Grand Bleu - donderdag 3

Shiva - Log day 11 - Ain't no mountain high enough

December 3, 2015 – It’s day 11 of our trip. The sea is like in the beginning of our trip: long, high waves that are coming from the back right corner which is causing the washing machine effect. We therefore had a bit of a bumpy night, just because we were rolling in our beds and therefore some difficulties falling asleep. Other than that a fine night with no extraordinaries.  In the early morning Herman threw out a fishing line, with little expectation because of the high waves, but few hours later we did catch a Mahi Mahi again. Catching and preparing fish has become part of our daily routine now! We’re looking forward to the fish curry that we will have for lunch tomorrow.  Today started as a sunny and very warm day. Pura Vida - Tag 12 - Bergfest

Hallo miteinander!

Cookelu meu - last report before reaching St. Lucia

14degrees 38.155minutes North, 58 degrees 49.167minutes West, course 280 magnetic, on autohelm 3000 pilot, 6.5 knots boat speed, wind from East-Northeast at 28 knots, 127 0nautical miles away from destination, barometer 1013 (a drop of 3mbar over the last 3 hours), waves 3.0 meters high overcast and squally and 28 degrees C air temperature. This I wrote a couple  hours before in the log book ( yes we meticulously keep one since I left Turkey at the first days of July). As we approach St. Lucia it seems the waves are getting bigger. Right after the log book entry I started to make a bread which is now baking in the oven. LaLuna - dag 12

ETA is momenteel volgende week vrijdag. We krijgen nu continu windkracht 5 a 6 in de zeilen geduwd en zo hebben we de voorbije 24. read more...

Carmen. read more...

Taistealai - Wind Waves and Weeds

The Atlantic is a powerful ocean, and its moods can turnquickly as we discovered yesterday. After a glorious afternoon of speeding alongunder big blue, our tradewind spinnaker, in an 8-10 knot breeze, the predictedstronger easterlies arrived. Around us the waves, which had been our playfulfriends during the afternoon, switched to become broad-shouldered playgroundbullies; nudging us sideways when they thought we weren’t looking.  Too much for big blue, so we switched topolled out headsail and mainsail. However, the wind and waves had not finished their funand laid on some more entertainment for us.  After a friendly chat with ARC boatAqualuna close by our position, we gybed the boat – changed course by puttingthe stern through the wind to set our sails on the opposite side.. read more...

Ruby Rose - Day 12- Half-way!!

Yee-haw, we’re over half-way!   We passed this exciting milestone at about 6am this morning, and are todaycelebrating with fish and chips for lunch (the chips part of things being everso slightly fraught with danger in this rolly swell, but Nick seems to bemanaging with only a minimal number of oil burns) and steak for dinner, completewith a (small) glass of red.  However, even though we’re half-way in terms of miles, we think we’reprobably over half-way in terms of days spent at sea, our rationale being thatwe’ve used so little diesel so far that we’re not going to be shy about puttingthe engine on to keep our speed up if the winds drop off again.  But no need to worry about that just yet- we’re sailing along at 7 knotswith a couple of reefs in at the moment, which is. read more...

Marisja - log 03-12-2015: blauw

EH01 - Bog Day 11 - Less than 1000 Nm to go

Thismorning we reached our 1000 Nm to go point so excitement is building on boardabout our arrival in about 5 days time. We‘ve had some eventful days since ourlast blog, have a look what our lovely Sue has to share:   Well it’sbeen a veritable Disney sea life experience here on EH01, over the last coupleof days. On Tuesday morning 3 of our number saw several ..... what looked likeyellow cushions ...... drifting by us. One  thought  was that theywere jelly fish or possibly sunfish- a slow moving blob that floats along justunder the surface of the water. Definitely one to look up when we get home! Hanse Sailor - Day 11 (Tuesday): sunshine and no fish

On the 11th day of the ARC (which started on the 22nd 1400 UTC of Novemberwhereas we started on the 23rd around 2200 UTC) nothing in particular happenother than general relaxing with some trimming of the sails. During the day wemade around 8 knots with the gennaker in 15 knot NE wind which increased duringthe late evening to 23 knots at which we changed to sail with the main sail, resulting in 7 knots of speed (course over ground). Before the sunset the fishline was whirled in at which we could conclude that no lure or hook was attachedto it. Only possible reason is naturally that is was bitten off by a giantcreature with sharp teeth. Obviously.  Happy times under the clear sky!   Johan, on Hanse Sailor. read more...

Rhumb - Day 11 - One wheel on our wagon, and we're still rolling along

Some good news and not so good news. The good news. With winds well into the 20's we have made great progress over the past couple of days, making 168 nm in the last 24 hours. With the wind set to continue we are confident in continuing good progress. Just one reef in the main overnight has still enabled us to keep up decent speed. The not so good news. Problem no:1 After a continuing set of issues with the generator, and following carrying out a number of tests provided by the installer, we have concluded that the generator has stopped producing power. Problem no: 2 - the watermaker has just filled the water tank with salt water, rendering it undrinkable, but probably OK for washing etc. until it runs out. With that in mind, we need to alert those there to meet us at the dockside of a. read more...

Furia - sailing in a soup of brown sea weeds

Day 11 seems to be more laborious. In the morning we raised the spinnaker again. We were sailing on port tack. Amazing speeds, however some 20 deg. off course, not exactly in our destination. There was some vibration felt and we checked the rudder and the keel with the GoPro camera to find out a big bunch of sea weeds around our keel closer to the bottom. Dropped the spinnaker, turned the engine on, turned into the wind, mainsail let our some way to avoid flapping and gave full throttle astern. We let the bunch of weeds loose. Decided to sail butterfly (poled out jib) on port tack. A lot of rolling. Changed the tack to starboard, more into the course. However,in the early afternoon we entered a soup of brown sea weeds. Dian tried to avoid them without success. They were everywhere. We. read more...

Four Seasons - Wish we hadn't sold our mid size spinnaker now...

We put a huge tear in the bottom of the light weight spinnaker when itcaught around the nav. light on the pulpit. As usual thiswas at night and everyone had just gone to bed leaving just 2 onwatch...Eventually get the bit in the water back aboard but what’s left at thetop of the mast has now firmly wrapped itself around the forestay, jamming theroller furling headsail. Shiva - Log day 10 - Halfway and still enjoying

December 2, 2015 – As the salty sea and the strong wind can damage many little things on board we daily make a ‘chaving round’ so to check if all lines are clear and still quality conform. During today’s round we discovered that we had a couple of flying fish on deck. Mariette had already seen one jumping into the boat during her night shift and this morning there were 3 more on the front deck. Now we could examine them from close! Interesting birds, uh, fish.  We’ve sailed 188 miles in the last 24 hours. A nice distance thanks to the steady wind of 15 to 20 knots. We are more than halfway now! Over the last days we have of course collected a fair share of garbage with 6 people on board and no collective garbage company. So we have our own system in trash management:. read more...

White Cliffs - Log Santa Claus Night's Watch

On August 13,  1962, a little boy was born and his name wasn’t Sue. It wasn’t Johnny either as one might now think, oh no, it was Freddy, little Freddy Pink. At first he wasn’t too happy about his name, since black would have given him more streetcredibility in life’sgame. And mr. Mercury had already taken all the credits for Freddy. So it wasn’t his title that helped him sail smoothly through life and neither was it his remarkable ability to dance the jive. No no, dear reader ahoy, it was sailing that fulfilled his life with joy. Hejira - Arrival

14 04.457N 060 56.971WThursday 3rd December 2015The day dawned with sunshine for a change and the breeze holding up sufficiently to sail quite fast for most of the day. As the afternoon progressed, our timings suggested that we might be able to arrive in time to have a celebratory drink in the evening and this became a manic focus but the loss of wind then plucked this prospect away. The decision to motor for a couple of hours was a ‘no brainer’ and we reverted to the sails for the ARC photos taken from a rib as we ghosted across the finishing line and through the tight entrance channel into Rodney Bay Marina. Thursday 3nd DecemberRace Day 11Yesterday felt like quite a busy boat day.  After a night of fun helming the previous night the poo pipe on the starboard side was conquered.  This involved Dave and I dismantling the headlining, wrestling with the anaconda like piping and Dave giving it a good rodding in the most peculiar fashion (video evidence available for a small fee).  After dumping on the deck the job was almost complete – or so we thought! We re-wrestled with the smelly giant, wedging ourselves in cupboards and bilges covered in (insert imaginative word here).  As a treat we had a salt water bucket fight (note from Dave – always go for the bucket with the rope…good for reloading! Hera - Bergfest

Firefly - Penang Island

Today is Thursday 3rd December and Firefly departed the Straits Quay anchorage off Penang at 0700 bound for Langkawi Island. As expected there was little wind at first, about 5 knots and for the first few hours it was motor sailing to the north west with just the jib set. However, for the first time in a good while there is wind! We have over 10 knots and its a beam reach to Langkawi so Firefly is clipping along at over 6 knots. The wind direction is as it should be in the 'North East Monsoon' so perhaps we will cover the remaining 30 miles under sail?Prior to arriving at the Straits we had a night anchored in the passage between Penang Island and Jerejak Island. Jerejak was once the location of a colonial prison and at a later stage a leper colony. Once nicknamed 'Alcatraz of the East',. read more...

Skyelark of London - Day 10

Day 10So the wind has definitely picked up and with that a need to re/learn how to sleep in a washing machine.Otherwise a slightly more relaxed day of good speed sailing {an early Gybe put us on a direct line to St. Lucia}.Dan had to do a minor sail repair whilst others burned through a bit of book reading.A couple of nibbles on the fishing line, but no success in landing anything today. The day was rounded off with a good wholesome mean {thanks Sam Young for the only recipe that I could remember > Pork chops roasted in apple and onion with mash}.Finally another clock change. As this results in someone needing to do an extra hour shift, Dan and Em decided to use some of this time by introduce an extra course for dinner > an unexpected and home made peach crumble and custard.David Y. read more...

Sunrise - Tag 10 & 11

Fisch an. Wieder ein wunderschöner, blaugrün, goldener Mahi Mahi. 60 cm. Ein. read more...

Albatros - Dec. 2 at 2:07 pm

With Wolfgang at the helm, we just crossed the 1000 (remaining) miles mark, yeah! The wind has picked up to 15kn and we make about 7kn of speed with the Passat sail configuration. We gave up fishing since we have lost all suitable gear to the sea, and we still haven't found the scores of cake that we have stored somewhere on the boat. This morning one of the ropes for our make-shift spi boom ripped when we were making good speed during a squall. We used the occasion to further improve our design. All works well.Albatros Update (Part 2): we found the cake! It only took us eleven days. Probably a good thing given that we are still 983 nautical miles away from Saint Lucia. Doing 8kn now. Time for coffee!. read more...
