From Visby to St. Petersburg

The ARC Baltic fleet have been sailing together for over two weeks, gradually making their way east exploring the Baltic States. Since leaving the Danish Island of Bornholm, crews have made the most of their time visiting the medieval town of Visby, the remote Island of Gotska Sandon and capital of Estonia, Tallinn.

Included in the rally itinerary for its peaceful nature and beautiful countryside, the remote island of Gotska Sandon was a must see for all. The anchorage found on the north east side of the island can be open to strong winds making a night on the ‘hook’ uncomfortable. However, light winds, calm seas and sunshine made the island the tranquil paradise the fleet were hoping for. Most enjoyed a walk to the small village where one of the few inhabitants briefed the fleet about Gotska’s history and sites to see including the seal sanctuary and lighthouse, of which they kindly opened for crews to visit allowing them to see panoramic views of the island and anchorage. The weather and temperature was such that numerous participants even braved a swim.

A period of light winds was followed by 10-20 knots of westerly breeze during the fleet’s passage to Tallinn. Combined with calm seas and pleasant sailing, the passage to Estonia was enjoyed by all. Arrival in Tallinn marked the fourth country visited en-route. Based in the TOP Pirita Marina, originally built for the Estonian Olympic Bid in the 1970’s, the fleet were well based with easy transport links to the old town in the city centre which is surrounded by its large protective stone walls. A traditional Estonian crew dinner was held at the Restoran Maikravh found in the main square of the old town opposite the impressive town hall. During the fleet’s time in Tallinn, many crew utilised the ‘Hop on Hop off’ tour buses to make the most of sightseeing and exploring all that was on offer.

Yesterday the fleet made landfall in St. Petersburg in blustery conditions. This week crews have time to visit the main sites that the city has to offer including guided tours of the Hermitage and Peterhof Museum Reserve as well as a busy evening schedules including operas, ballets and Russia folk shows.
