Makena - Pacific Crossing Day 3

We are making great progress here. I’m writing this just after 6pm on Saturday March 7th and we have just over 2370nm to go. In our 3rd 24 hour period since the leg start we’ve done 221nm by the GPS, which is close to our all time record. With 11kts SOG frequently up on the monitor today I’m sure we could pick a different 24 hour window and totally smash our record. It is a little noisy aboard with the seas knocking us about but things are comfortable enough and not too hard on the rigging, which is the main thing!

We always enjoy our twice daily chats with the other boats using the SSB radio. It feels good to be in touch. Today we even fit in an extra chat session and we spoke to a French boat named Argo that we happened to see off to our portside during lunch (they didn’t show up on AIS much to their surprise). They had left San Cristobal on Tuesday night.

Pentagram used yesterday’s chat to get a banana bread recipe since they had the classic “all bananas ripened at once” event. We pretty much have the same but here it is banana flambe time when that happens.

So we are really flying along here. No major problems to report. There is an annoyance with our genoa furler tripping its breaker but hopefully we will get to the bottom of that. Otherwise our water tanks have just been fully refilled by our beloved water maker so we could survive for at least 20 days before you even being to count the wine or beer! With our English and Welsh crew members there has been a new record set for cups of tea made aboard - Dad is happy to partake. They are some complaints about the biscuits rations! I got too much chocolate and not enough digestives, it seems! We’ll survive!

Kai grabbed the SSB mic today as the call was ending and he just babbled into it in full voice a few times. I held down the button so that it would transmit for laughs for anyone that had not yet signed off. Sure enough Pentagram came in telling him they could hear him loud and clear and when the children of Aretha each said hello his eyes were just wide with amazement. He is going to be so happy to see that crew in Hiva Oa!

Hope everyone is well.
