Shelduck - Sun 15 Dec Skipper's Fall

Sun 15 Dec 14:45.385N 55:54.185W Distance traveled in 24h 155 miles

We are out 3 weeks today and in that time have traveled 2735 miles at an average speed of 5.43 knots. Cloudless day for a change.

This is our 3rd or 4th day of continuous rollercoaster combined with skid pan rally swerving, bucketing and rolling.

At about midday yesterday (Saturday) the Skipper was moving to the chart table to download a weather forecast when he was caught off balance in a broach and was thrown across the boat and landed on a spot just to the left of his spine on the bar protecting the cooker.  Gabby, our health, safety and welfare officer, decided he should not be moved from the floor for an hour. Having made her assessments she decided he may, at worst, have cracked a rib as his symptoms and pain did not indicate anything more serious. When he had lain still and she was sure it was safe she then arranged with the crew members to pull him on a blanket to under the table to protect him from flying objects.

After a further hour Neil reported movement in all body parts and that he had only superficial cuts and some bruising but was very sore. He was able to transfer to the bunk above from the floor and stayed there till midday today when he returned to the watch system.

During his time in the bunk he altered the watch times to 2 hours on and 4 hours off with just one person on deck/watch at a time. At midday today watches were changed to 4 hours on and 4 hours off in pairs. No long 6 hour watches during the day for now.

Sightings: flying fish, glimpses of the filling moon between the squall clouds.
