Edelweiss - Day #11: Caught a fish!

Or, rather, a fish caught us! Providing welcome diversion during the otherwise quiet and sleepy 3-6am watch, Lyell and I heard an unusual swishing/flopping noise on the bow last night. A flashlight revealed a foot-long black fish (we're pretty sure it was not a flying fish but don't know what kind it was) flopping on the starboard side of the bow. Thank heavens for the courageous Lyell, who (just as I was debating what I was going to do about this, as the "responsible adult") headed up there to help it back into the water. Just as he neared, however, the fish's flopping paid off and he slipped back over the side. Whew! We were thrilled to have something to report when Stuart and Mason showed up at 6am to take over; usually, it's slim pickin's for news.

And we have a big milestone here today: last night we passed the halfway mileage mark for the trip from Las Palmas to St Lucia, having completed over 1600 miles in our estimated 3200 total to cover. Our Chief of Morale, Mason, has cooked us up some oreo brownies and we'll be celebrating with a party later today when we're all awake. Chances are good that the festivities will coincide with what is everyone's favorite time of the day: "News of the World" hour, when Stuart gets the emails from the ARC office and reads out the weather and other boats' positions. Amazing that that can take up so much time and garner so much interest - but it is truly a highlight!
