Ula - Day 5 - 28th November

Awoke to a flat calm ocean. Would not have been surprised to see Ranworth Church tower in the distance as we moored for a lunchtime pint at a Norfolk Broadland pub.

Chief Engineer has turned his nimble fingers to gardening. A few pots of compost and seeds promise fresh salad leaves for the latter stages of our voyage. (Will make a pleasant accompaniment to the inevitable cucumber sandwiches!)

For the first time the cabins are feeling warm and stuffy, according to the log display the water temperature is over 25 degrees C. (seems unlikely but nobody volunteering to take a swim to test it).

Sat phone conversations with shore based crew (wives, girlfriends and offices).

Downloading the fleet map from Yellow Brick results in a celebratory bottle of wine as we realise we are well ahead of the southerly pack, and that many who initially headed west, are now following us south.

By lunch (chorizo and butter bean casserole with salad and fresh bread) we have hoisted our asymmetric spinnaker, a sail which rarely featured in the 2011 ARC crossing but which is now powering us along at 9-10 knts. With a flat sea this is both exhilarating and comfortable.  A forgotten jewel, the asymmetric is duely christened 'Sparrow' in recognition of his resurrection from the furthest depths of the sail locker. His name sake ' Cptn Jack' would be proud of the comeback.

Meanwhile 'Borris' remains bagged on deck………..
