Johanem - !Johanem blog 13 June

After the excitements of Mike's birthday yesterday which included two fizz o'clocks (FOC) today has started on a more serious and less alcoholic note. The forecast thick fog has failed to materialise and instead we have a bright sunny morning with good sailing wind from NE. We are 240 miles from Cape St Vincent and hope to reach Logos on Saturday morning if this wind holds. Its a slightly sad thought that once into the Med the boat is unlikely to be this far from land for some time, although there is an alternative school of thought about this!
Tonight we will change the regular dinner menu of caviar, pate de foie gras and cabbage to steak, but only in the unlikely event that we do not catch a big tuna today. After hooking a seagull yesterday (which would have posed an interesting culinary challenge, seagull fricasee pwerhaps?) there are very few seagulls following our fishing lure with much interest. Unfortunately ditto the fish.

The big coloured cruising chute has been great this leg but we are now going to windward so are back on white sails. Unlike most boats we have not sailed at night with the coloured cruising chute as it needs several people to put it away and in the middle of the night this is not ideal. This partly explains our strategic position towards the back of the fleet. The crew continue to attribute our position to being part of a cunning plan by the skipper to pounce on the leading boats at the last minute and refuse to accept the fact that Johanem, like me, was built more for comfort than speed and is one of the slowest boats in the fleet. Its only a race when when we find ourselves in front. The rest of the time its a rally.

We are looking forward to welcoming on board in Lagos for The Official Inspection the wives of two of the motley crew. We will try to ensure that said crewmembers are clean and are out of quarantine by the time we land. We are looking forward to welcoming Mark, David and Duncan, the new crew for the next leg to Mallorca
Its now BOC so I must attend to my barman duties. Lots of dolphins spotted but still no whales!
