Salamander - Early food

To give everyone a chance to settle into life at sea we've chosen to have mainly dry pre prepared food that is simple to both prepare and eat. This means that no one has to do anything too stressful for the first few days. We've already got a good routine going with breakfast of porridge at 6am lunch at 12 noon and supper at 6pm.The second night we did have hot food of mince, peas & new potatoes which went down well.Sue has been hard at work in the weeks running up to departure and has created around 168 precooked meals ready for the trip. I don't think we'll be going hungry somehow!Tim - Salamander Tour Manager and Guest Social Media Editorthesalamandersailingadventure.com. read more...

Salamander - Drinks

Not that sort!! We are a dry boat! Seriously though hydration is really important at sea. We all have numbered 500 ml water bottles and numbered thermal mugs.Whilst coffee is not banned it is discouraged and I seem to have set a trend in alternative herbal options. The current favourite is ginger tea which seems to have been well received by all those that have tried it. It is quite strong though if the bag is left to brew in the mug.We have plenty of other alternatives,I wonder which will be voted the most popular by the time we get to St.Lucia. Perhaps we can make a brew for Mary the flag lady?Tim - Salamander Tour Manager and Guest Social Media Editorthesalamandersailingadventure.com. read more...

Salamander - Line up, look up

Steering a boat that you are not familiar with can take some getting used to. On Salamander there are plenty of instruments to help with steering and navigation. There's obviously a compass but there are also dials showing wind strength and direction, boat speed through the water, depth (of little use in an ocean - ours currently reads 2.6 m below the keel! Clearly this is not the actual depth, more like a passing dolphin or shoal of fish has swum under us triggering the sensor!) and a digital compass. We then have a full blown AIS screen with every conceivable piece of information we could ever need.Even with all this kit, including Autohelm we are choosing to hand steer the entire trip! When we are sailing in inland waters there's usually something to aim at to hold your course. Jadamama - Day 5 blog Jadamama

Good morning from Jadamama as we finally get beyond the Cape Verde islands and well on our voyage west. We are certainly taking the scenic road and have covered 860nm to date with just over 2,000nm to go. We had been following the pressure southwest until we hit the easterly trades this morning at about 19 50N 24 50W just when I was beginning to worry about my strategy !We have carried our trade wind sail now for 24 hours on starboard tack and not planning to change so today is all about housekeeping and settling in for the long haul ahead. We had our first fish supper last night as Marc and Maryrose vie for top dog on the rod to all our benefit but we haven’t been so lucky with the vegetables with some of the storage strategies not really paying off. The only breakages of note have been. read more...

Guten Morgen!Wir hatten 12 Stunden kein Internet, weil im Hintergrund Weise von einem iPhone, ein Update lief, welches in kürzerer Zeit sämtliche Gebühren der Prepaidkarte verbraucht hatte. Navasana - Day 5: Dolphins and the watermaker diaries

A whole pod of dolphins swam with us for a while, was amazing! Really hoping we see them at night when they look like torpedos with the bioluminescence. Watermaker rejected 0% yesterday and produced the full 100 liters per hour of water!!! back to normal it seems. Wooohooo! Fingers crossed it stays that way. We had really wonderful trade wind sailing conditions, 15-20 knots of breeze, blue water and blue skies! Dan made an awesome Brazilian feijoada beans and chorizo stew last night. Yum yum!Chet. read more...

Joanna - Fishy business

Fishy business - an update from JoannaIt's been a quick start to ARC2022 with strong winds and high waves for the first few days. A quick start can't be said for Joanna's fishing experience - well until today. After the initial excitement of the start in Las Palmas and first set of night shifts, we dropped our fishing lines in the hope of having a tasty, fresh dinner to celebrate a successful departure. After a long day of waiting for a bite, we pulled the lines having had no luck. To our surprise when the lines were back onboard, we saw one of the lures had been bitten off and line snapped - how did we miss that!? What a turtle disaster! It wasn't all bad - we were still rewarded with an excellent sunset.A similar situation happened over the next few days. The crew eagerly dropped the. read more...

Petoya Too - Petoya Too on the way southwards

After strong winds and heavy swell on the Start we tried to go westwards and hoped to get a Wind window for a direct Trip to St. Lucia. But allthe weather forecasts were right. The ridge will come more south and we changed our plan. So now we are heading south as we should have done from beginning on. Today we had a very nice siling with our spinnaker and hopefully we are on the way, to get a little closer to the yachts in front of us. We are in good condition although I have a little problem with a rib because of hitting an edge on the boat very rough. For tonight the spinnaker is down but as soon as possible we want to sset it again to get a little faster. Best wishes for a safe trip for all the crews out there. Regards, Thomas. read more...

Xenial - Day 18 - HALF WAY

Yes the title is purposefully in all caps, we are very happy to have reached this milestone. Today, after 6 days, 1 hour and 10 minutes, our DTD (distance to destination) indicator read 1'100 nm. The Swedes broke into song, and more precisely they sang "For he's a jolly good fellow". But let's begin from the start. We had a good night, albeit really slow and kept losing positions because we were without foresail. Still too much wind to hoist the code zero or the gennaker. From a sailing perspective then, we were a little demotivated and didn't do much throughout the morning. But our crew is never idle and always needs a new project. Please make some noise for our newly formed engineering committee! Ulrik and Janne are the two members, and Gustaf is a permanently seated observer (read -. read more...

Amandla Kulu - D4_ From Zero to Hero (Part II)

Captain’s Log. Star Date 24Nov. Day 4. Fourth day on the water.2320 GMT.2320 Local.21º 10 N024º 51 W ///bunching.pucks.arminghttps://w3w.co/bunching.pucks.arming  You’ll be reading about a collective sigh of ‘ahh’ cross fleet blogs today.  Breeze dropped a little at first light, sea state settled and the sun was warm.  We were able to get some air flowing through The Good Ship Amandla Kulu as the temperature rose.  Immediately after first light, we hoisted our Code Zero (big flappy sail thing that goes at the very front) which was great for morale. After a few days of [necessary] neglect a solid few hours was spent on a deep clean and getting things clean, tidy and ship shape. Some chopping of vegetables and a tasty fresh lunch. read more...

Kali - Taking Black Mamba for a walk on the Atlantic

Good morning Atlantic,Kali is up and running again! With our spinnaker (the Black Mamba) up front, we are steadily and happily making our way south. Okay, there have been some minor hickups: we have some doubts about the functionality of our AIS system and our bilges have seen some salt water. The good news is: there is absolutely no traffic here and we have an incredibly skilled crew member who has managed to fix the salt water pump so for the moment there are no more worries. Our skipper delighted the crew with a creamy coconut curry with roasted almonds and coconut flakes on top and so we have sailed well nourished into a beautiful starry night. We applied the knowledge from the ARC seminar to find Polaris and determine our latitude. During the night we were accompanied by different. read more...

Mairmade - Day#5 - Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, but especially to our new American friends aboard Out of the Woods, Coronado, Second Wave, and North Wind...What I'm thankful for (not in order 🤣): -- On this sunny day of light winds and calm seas, I'm thankful for Jeremy the Gennaker (😜 Mr. Wyatt!).We've been flying it most of the day and it's allowed us to make good progress almost directly to St. Lucia. It'll be sad to put him away for the night, but safety first!-- My darling wife of 30 years, Claudia, who was brave enough (crazy enough?) to embark on this adventure with me.Today she pulled out all the stops in the galley to serve up a full Thanksgiving dinner of Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and green beans; pumpkin pie for desert of course 🤩Happy crew, happy. read more...

Salamander - Seasickness

I'm so lucky! In over 40 years of sailing I've never had seasickness. I recognize that this is very unusual and that professional sailors can be seriously affected. The crew of Salamander did amazingly well although there were definitely some affected quite badly. We worked together to help those affected and encouraged minimal stressful activities that might bring on the dreaded sickness.By the end of the second day we all seem to have adjusted quite well and are capable of doing all that we need. Appetites are up and normality is starting to pervade, whatever normal is!!The wind and the sea do seem to have abated somewhat and although the rolling motion is still ever present it feels much less now than the first day.Tim - Salamander Tour Manager and Social Media Editor. read more...

Sunbeat VI - Day 5 - Glorious day in the Atlantic

A turning point in the Atlantic. We ceased going south and gybed towards Saint Lucia first thing this morning. Big Red (spinnaker) was promoted to the top of the mast. As a reward, we had our first cooked breakfast of the trip - enjoyed by all.The Atlantic Olympics were started, Tim showed early form with 5 press-ups more than required… has he peaked too early???Saw flying fish and a few dolphins passed in the distance. We are still adopting the sustainable fishing approach - by not landing the one fish that took the lure.. read more...

Charisma - SY CHARISMA | Tag 4 - flotti karotti

Circe - An American Thanksgiving

Today is an American holiday that the crew of Circe is spending onboard with a traditional dinner of turkey, ham,Cape Cod cranberry relish, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, gravy and herbed biscuits. Each of us gave thanks for something in our lives and I’m happy to say we each mentioned something to do with this adventure called the ARC! Indeed, our water maker quit working on day 2 and despite the diligent perseverance of Captain Bernie and crewman Dave, the Aquagiv giveth no more. With the entirety of the passage ahead of us, we moved into rigid water usage restrictions. It’s salt water showers, flushing and dish washing for the remainder of the passage with fresh water reserved solely for drinking, teeth brushing, and cook hand washing. In other words, you may want to steer clear of. read more...

Games Maker 2 - Thanksgiving on Games Maker 2

So, it’s Thanksgiving today and our American ace tactician, Nestor Lopez, came on watch at 0800 to find that Joz and I had decorated the saloon and cockpit of our catamaran in USA flag bunting! A special roast dinner is being prepared by super cookie, Lel, and is filling the boat with a wonderful aroma. The sound of Whitney Houston reciting The Star Spangled Banner will be filling the warm evening air as we enjoy social hour at 1800, starting with Tanqueray 0.0 (alcohol free!) gin and tonics. “God Bless America” (and Nestor for - so far - plotting a damn fine course!)image1. read more...

Salamander - Leaving pontoon

Our schedule for Sunday morning was clearly communicated via the crew WhatsApp messaging. We were to be on board no later than 10am ready to leave at 11am.All was going to plan until we discovered our YB Connect wasn't playing. One of the crew went in search of the team from YB, only for them to get word and get to us!! We did get us all connected and we were all now on board. There were the usual goodbyes and I have to say I felt very emotional. More of that later!!We did get away at 11 and were one of the first out through the narrow channel which was lined with well wishers all shouting and waving. This was now very real and we had a job to do!The large navy vessel acting as committee boat dropped their anchor and our yellow outer distance marker was laid. Navasana - Day 4: Finally getting into blue water trade wind sailing conditions

Winds and swell keeps easing and for the first time it felt like the conditions we experienced when we did the pacific crossing 11 years ago. That time we had a 38ft monohull with a monitor Windvane and no watermaker, so this time we are a bit spoilt but it is debatable if we have a watermaker ;-\ Good news it is starting to make water that is passing the salinity meter 90% of the time. Which is much better than 0%-50% earlier. can’t wait till tomorrow when sailing conditions should improve even more.I made paratas with fried eggs for dinner, Yum, yum, the crew were happy. Everything tastes so much better when sailing :-) Btw we are spending our time playing Uno, exploding kittens and monopoly deal . Good times!Chet. read more...

Amokura - Log Day 6 - Frittata disaster & fixes

Do we stop at night and anchor? This is sometimes asked by non-sailing folks back home when you announce you are doing a long ocean crossing (or even a night passage across the English Channel!)Not in 5000m of water you don't, and floating marinas in the centre of the Atlantic are yet to be invented! So round the clock sailing it is. On Amokura we have been running 3 hrly night watches from sunset to sunrise. Currently 2000 GMT to 0800, we rotate these every night so it is fair and people have a turn to be on each watch.  When on night watch, lifejackets are always worn and we never leave the cockpit without waking another crew member and clipping on our safety lines. Last night I did 2000-2300, which meant I got to see the sunset and have an uninterrupted 9 hours sleep. Bliss! We will. read more...

Oceano - Log Day 5 - The ways of sea-ing

Every few hours ( the exact amount depends upon captain’s decision) we are taking turns behind the steering wheel to observe the sea. There can be two of us, three, sometimes a party of one. I remember the very first time I was alone on the watch. We were crossing the Irish Sea from Dublin to Isle of Man. It was foggy and grayish, the sea was brownish green and I felt like I was the loneliest person in the world. But it was also a liberating, almost ecstatic experience. Only me and my thoughts - nightmare for almost everyone in our world, clogged with distractions. For me it usually equally painful - when I am sitting alone in my Warsaw apartment at night all I can think of is my mistakes, death and - as Taylor Swift puts it in a song - „all of the people I ghosted stand up in the room”.. read more...

Endeavour III - Endeavour III - Day 5

By Day 5 the boat has settled down to a rhythm known to mariners down the ages: watching downloaded Netflix films, searching for missing USB charging leads, experiencing the joy and despair of an intermittent Starlink connection and the frustration of trying to configure Iridium Go for crew-wide email, and listening to a strange sound from one of the cabins, which might be a crew member learning to play the ukulele, or a stowaway cat.According to AIS we are not alone, we are surrounded by ARC boats. But these must be ghost ships for try as we might we now never see them silhouetted on the far smooth line between sea and sky.Already we have lost one crew - unfortunately murdered in the cockpit. This was somewhat alarming to those on the boat not familiar with human Cluedo.Last night we. read more...

Disa - New Crew Members Join Us Mid-Crossing

After our first few really rough days, the waves calmed down considerably and we felt more confident to let our sails out further and enjoy the breeze. When everything is fine on board, the wind and waves cooperating well, then it is really beautiful being at sea. We’ve been visited by dolphins, enjoyed some good food, good music and good books.Any day now I’ll be ready to take out my knitting. Two days ago we were joined by new crew member, James, a healthy white stork who seemed a bit tired. He circled our boat many times before deciding that we would be good company. After trying out a few spots, he decided to settle down at the stern, sheltering in the lee of our outboard engine. He’s not a very talkative crew member, but good at keeping watch, his beady eye always on the lookout for. read more...

Lomvi - Day 7 - Need for speed

Dear fellow species,Day 7 would mark the one week on the ocean if the counting of days would make sense. But believe it or not, we still have one day left before we cross the one week mark. Maybe time and space is relative after all. Regardless of quantum physics things are staring to improve here on the caravan heading west. The ocean is much calmer, and we have a steady breeze of 9 to 13 m/s. Currently genoa and half main wing on wing. With a 6+ knots average. Why the heckerouiny are we going this fast? It's a mix of reasons. First, we discovered that we are the slowest boat in the entire fleet. You are probably well aware as you keep track on the yb app. We only receive a list of positions once a day, and there have been five boats behind us every day. After a closer look on these. read more...

Salamander - Sundowners and other friends

For me a great part of doing the ARC is meeting like-minded people. The opportunity to explore why people are doing this Rally and make new friends.I started by following the FB posts from ARC+ and posted a comment to see if there were any ARC crew around that wanted to meet up. I was in Las Palmas a total of 5 weeks having helped deliver Salamander down early and chosen not to fly home. This resulted in me finding a great friend and we shared several drinks and meals in the run up to the start of the ARC celebrations.I also made a real point also of saying hello to as many people as possible at the Sundowner events in the dinghy park. Again a real privilege to meet some fantastic people all with stories to share. For me this has been a really important part of my ARC experience,. read more...

Bolero - Day 6

Day 6We all found the night tough, the cross seas made sleeping down below a challenge as it seemed almost impossible to jam yourself into a berth and not roll around. It was difficult to see the clouds in the dark. The only hint that they were there was the starless part of the sky.We had a few 25 knot winds under localised clouds, but no major squalls overnight.Bolero trucked along in the totally moonless night. We had one flying fish land on deck, Gwyn returned it to the sea.It was good to see other boats reappearing on AIS as the night progressed. Dawn came as a relief from the darkness. We received an email from Falcon welcoming us back into the fold which was very touching. It’s great to know that others are looking out for us, as we are them.WCC rallies really do bring a camaraderie. read more...

Falcon - Crossing Day 6

Distance run last 24 hours, 165 nautical miles.Miles left until Grenada; 1179.By noon, the time we start/finish a cruising day,we had just failed to reach our half-way point of the crossing, so our mid-Atlantic celebrations have been delayed until tomorrow. The main event of the day has therefore centred around executing ‘the gybe’ to put us back onto the favoured side of our rhum line to Grenada. For readers less familiar in the technicalities of sailing, the gybe is a potentially violent manoeuvre where the sails (and heavy accoutrements such as the large slab of heavy metal called the boom) pass rapidly from one side of the boat to the other powered, in our case, by the full 22 knot force of the Atlantic trade winds!Central to this merry dick dance of a rig change, is sending two heroic. read more...

Jadamama - Day 4 Blog: Butterflies and Fishes from Jadamama

Butterflies and FishesIn the early morning while your scribe was asleep, crewman Marc, yesterday’s epistle writer, became a fisherman too and caught a lovely little sashimi destined Mahi Mahi. We cannot wait until dinner when Maryrose will serve it as a light starter. She is keeping the main course a secret for now. Meanwhile fresh from his exploits with the line, the breeze strength and direction finally being in synch, he and the skipper launched our beautiful blue butterfly! (North Sails “Trade Wind Sail”) This is now wafting us westwards at a rate of knots (which rate we will keep to ourselves for now). It’s a lovely sight, big and blue, flown on our wide bodied craft without a pole, but with some assistance from the boom. Fair sailing to all. PollyJadamama. read more...

Skye Blue - Skye Blue provisioning

See, that provisioning for an Atlantic crossing thing. Yes, the ARC style provisioning where no one has ever starved. We did not want to be known as the first boat ever to do so. We have taken that too far... Knocked out by fruit is a real and present danger! We are currently on 7 a day. We have packed up our Yellowbrick (no of course not) as we can easily be found by the trail of banana skins we are leaving behind us. We have enough garlic to fend off the entire population of North Atlantic vampires. Neil has eaten more pears in the first three days than in his entire existence. Maja just made a delish banana cake and later Baldrick is cooking Spanish tortilla - hoping to make a dent in the potato stash.... We are ok on the food side. And the update on the sailing: we got the main up. read more...

Salamander - In search of Mary the flag lady

Before setting off on my ARC adventure I received a message from some friends of my Aunt and Uncle. The message referred to a lady called Mary, to be found on the pontoons in St.Lucia, selling flags. the friends, Bob and Agneta had met Mary some 20 years ago when they took part in the ARC and had tasked me to find out if she was still around and pass on all good wishes. So now we have a mission as well as the task of crossing the Atlantic. For all on board, apart from owners Chris and Sue this is our first crossing. For them it's their 12th.I chose the boat on the basis that it wasn't a novelty and that therefore we had a great chance of making it across and doing so safely. Bluewater Mooney - BLUEWATER MOONEY 23.11.2022
