Free Spirit - Log 30: 15 June 2015

Miracles will never cease. At around midnight the loom of the lighthouse on Cape St. Vincent, the most southwesterly point of continental Europe, lit up the night sky over the bow. Free Spirit, and her motley crew of vagabonds, thieves and Carole are back! This news is sure to be greeted with great joy in the old country. I expect the bunting will be out and there will be and music and dancing in the streets. The excitement of the young women who have been emailing the young whipper-snapper every day - sometimes several times a day -must be boundless. Perhaps David Cameron will order a public holiday and Her Majesty will send us a note of congratulation. Or perhaps not.

We are currently sailing (motoring) along the coast of the Algarve towards the bay of Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar. The Chief Engineer, having checked the engine oil a few times, has put out fishing lines. This is an uncharacteristically optimistic gesture on his part as a month has passed since we last caught a fish and he is not normally upbeat about these things.  Still, you never know, and a nice fish - even a few sardines - would be very appropriate for a 'last supper' aboard. The rest of them are still asleep - dreaming of pleasures to come ashore I wouldn't be surprised. His Honour is off to Russia with a lady friend apparently. Best not to ask too many questions!  As for Richie, who likes to live close to the edge, the unique challenges of Liverpool life beckon once more and he has a business to run. If you can make it in Liverpool you can make it anywhere I always say. Mrs Trouble is on the 'phone excitedly announcing her arrival to all and sundry. She can't wait to see how much, and in what direction, the grandkids have grown in months she has been away. Me? I just have to keep my spirit free.
