American Spirit II - Day 233; A Slow Day in Darwin; Tuesday, August 26, 2014

Jack, Joel's Step Father, relayed to Joel that 'Pandora's Box' did in fact originate in Greek mythology. So the account I gave in a previous log, based on a cruising book I had read, about the term originating with the British ship Pandora was incorrect. Thank you Jack.

Up at 6:15 AM. Why up so early in port? Who knows. Dumb.

Breakfast at 9:00 AM or so consisted of scrambled eggs, potato, bacon and bread.

This morning we had nothing structured. I got a haircut, which cost $35.00; Jeanine did the laundry, which costs $40.00 ($5.00 per washing machine and $5.00 per dryer); Joel attached a new zinc to the propeller, using our emergency 40 cubic air tank to do so; and we transferred about 44 gallons of diesel from our jerry jugs to the main fuel tank.

At 5:00 PM we took a cab to Thrifty Car Rental where I rented a car for 2 days at a cost of $169.00. Joel was listed as a 'second' driver, with no extra charge in doing so. We then drove to the Wharf next to where all the war ships are tied up, and went to an outdoor restaurant called 'Crustaceans.' We ordered an appetizer, which the Australians call 'entrees,' of crocodile. Three skewers of crocodile meat. It was three skewers all right, but there were only 2 small pieces of crocodile meat per skewer. Somewhat of a rip off, 6 nugget size pieces of meat at $13.90 for the experience. Plus an order of garlic bread. For the main courses, which the Australians call 'mains,' I ordered Barramundi (fish); Joel had chicken; and Jeanine had a gigantic steak. For dessert Joel and I each had a sundae with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. Jeanine 'spooned in' for a sample. A very good dinner overall.

By 8:15 PM we were back at the boat and watched two movies: Source Code and Predators. Both movies were good. So were the milk duds and pop corn.

Lights out at 11:50 PM.
