Ula - Day 2 - 25th November

A frustrating night of light winds forcing us to head too far west in order to maintain any kind of headway. By midnight we resorted to the engine. “Well it’s not a race is it?” (but nobody really believes the sentiment).  Daybreak saw an improvement in the winds and after a short spell of main and genoa we were able to get our renowned “Boris” aloft again and this brought us steady progress in a more southerly direction at 8-9 kts. An approaching squall forced the furling of “Boris” and a return to Main and Genoa in a goose wing formation. Alastair and Julian require a change of clothes having received a thorough soaking on the foredeck.

Encouragingly our midday chart plot revealed that we have made about 30 miles more progress in the first 24 hours than in 2011.

Ula is constantly assaulted, by the sea, the wind, the sun and the crew. Skipper Paul finds a constant stream of little things to fix, to replace or improve. His care of the boat is matched only by Tanya’s care of the crew’s stomachs.
