Rivendell - Log: "Beau Knows"

4 December 2012

A follow-up to yesterday's whale sighting. Andy and Beau were the closest -particularily Beau, he feels pretty definitely that the whale was approximately 50 feet in length (18 - 19 meters) and that he came as closeas 3- 4 feet of the boat (1 meter). Anyhow it got everyone's blood pumping.

We continue to work on our sails. We had difficultly bring the genoa downdue to the heavy seas. So the tear increased a bit. Also because of theheavy surf it was difficult to work on it. So at the end of daylight everyone was pretty tired and went to sleep early - no movie. Our snacks last evening were brought aboard by Dom - he had brought some excellent cheeses, sausages, and brown breads from Hamburg, Germany. It was a treat. So because of a hard days work and exposure to the hot sun and heavy seas everyone got an early night's sleep.

I received an e-mail from my wife yesterday that my father-in-law passed away. Both my wife and daughter were there at his bed side when he passed away. My son will be flying in from Houston, Texas on Wednesday, the funeral in planned for Thursday. It very upsetting when something like this happens and you realize that you should be there supporting family members, but I know my two adult children (Chris and Amanda) will take charge and help out all that they can.

We woke up this morning with an Oyster 46 about a 1,000 yards away. She was making good time, going about 8 knots. They had their main sail reefed a bit, but their genoa was all of the way out. We spoke with them on VHF,they only have 3 aboard, Andy didn't have the heart to tell them that we have 9. Even though we are reefed to the third point and using just the stay sail it still creats a lot of horsepower and we steadily passed them. Also the extra waterline (82 vs. 46) makes for a smoother ride.

Let's hope that we are able to continue with sail repair today - and getgoing to St Lucia!

Cheers!
