Coyote 2 - coyote sunday

Our one week anniversary at sea was celebrated big style this morning when Teamatoma (Lorraine, Karyn, Andrew and Chris) woke the 6am shift, team LunaSea (Heidi, Emma, Steve and Peleg) with soft music.  The sleepers required a bit more than gentle melodies and a light shake however, but after some mild slapping and mild shouting, everyone woke up.  Disco music was found and soon our crowded cockpit was full of dancing sailors, ready for sunrise.  It’s possible that the laser focus we usually maintain on steering the boat was compromised during this episode.  No neighbours complained about loud music however, and neither did any dolphins.

Happily, there were no translucent squid on deck this morning, though one flying fish was helped back into the sea by the foredeck crew overnight.  We think they’re after the crackers and jam, but it’s hard to know for sure.  All that’s certain is that they’re responsible for the disappearance of Matt’s calculator.

Team LunaSea gybed the boat this morning and we’re once again sailing by the lee on a poled-out headsail.  This manoeuvre is called a “sail evolution”, although it sounds like armageddon below decks.

Skipper Matt showed us how to use the leech of the headsail like the leading edge of a spinnaker (without all the fuss), and how to use the feel rather than the instruments to ride the edge where we get 7.5 knots rather than the 5.5 knots we get by default.  Soon we will be using The Force to do this blindfolded like Luke Skywalker under the guidance of Yoda during that awesome light sabre scene in Star Wars.

We spent the morning watching the rollers sweep up behind us and surfing down their fronts.  The spinnaker is “safely stowed” in its bag.  The final cabbage met its watery end with a noble splash.  The toilet seat has been secured using a can of tomato soup.  Two people put on clean shirts today.  There is really so much more to report, but it will have to wait for another day.

Wishing all of you fair winds and sunshine,

Coyote 2 , skipper and crew.
