Mary Jo - Day 6. Sunday

Day 6 sees us with less than 2000 miles to go, and MaryJo is performing tremendously, averaging about 7 knots. Although she looks a little sad with her slightly banana-shaped boom, after I (Kerry) accidently gybed her, in 40 knot gusts on the first night. Also damaged was the mainsheet car, which was ripped from its track. Skipper Tony, who can fix anything, ingeniously repaired the broken traveller, and  and subsequently invented a new knot, which with a few metres of line, and a couple of hours, anyone can learn. So far on our 3000 mile trip from Conwy, Tony has made repairs to the heads, & autopilot. Priceless.
Expert Navigator, & chef Nick, has produced some magnificent meals, in between his sextant duties, & is finding his way around the Atlantic. Nick insists on using provisions in order of their predicted deterioration, and thankfully we have now run out of chicken. We had Coq au Vin, without the vin, Chicken Curry with japanese rice, for 2 days... Chicken Fajitas, Madrasi Chicken and vegetables.
Owner Alex spends a lot of his time studying the weather, but to date has been unable to improve it. Yesterday, Alex’s American eagle eyes spotted a large  fin whale 10 meters off our stern. It swam alongside us a couple of times, very close, & was an amazing sight.
Best bit of kit on the boat has been the hydrovane. We thought it would take till Barbados to learn how to use it, but it turned out to be very simple, as it steers to wind, rather than an autohelm’s compass course, it deals with gusts amazingly easily. All downwind so far, & really predictable.
More MaryJo news in a few days.
