Jubilare - Bornholm Tour

We departed from the dockside in two coaches everyone in good spirits and looking forward to exploring the island. The lead crew had certainly done their homework by providing us with handouts of information on places we were going to visit. The first stop was Hammershus Europe's largest medieval fortification. This is situated on the north western tip of Bornholm what a stunning position and presented wonderful photo opportunities. We then went on to Madsebakke to see beautiful rock carvings which are reminder of the islands older inhabitants dating back to 1100BC. We then stopped for lunch in a picturesque fishing village of Gudhjem. While there was attracted to a beautiful shop selling the famous glass and bought a piece as a reminder of the island. We were then taken to Nylars church this being a small circular structure with a diameter of only 11meters. In 1882 when the whitewash was removed it revealed a 13th century fresco frieze which depicts scenes from the Creation and the Last Judgement. The grave yard surrounding the church was so tranquil and peaceful surrounded by open fields. We then visited Svaneke once a small fishing village but now the smallest chartered market town in Denmark. Svaneke oozed charm with history, and delightful shops to tempt you no end. More interesting to us was the entrance into the small marina as this would have been our first port of call. We all appreciated that this would only be safe in calmer conditions as is narrow with granite rocks either side! We finished our tour by driving through a forrest on our return to Ronne. A truly wonderful day which was well organised.
