Firefly - Wind, waves and a new top speed

As forecast the wind and wave heights increased substantially as we sailed close to the Colombian coast. This was challenging for us all but Firefly coped splendidly. In the 2000 log we recorded a new top speed of 15.7 knots. Then in the early part of the morning we had wind speeds up to 43 knots and were reduced down to just the main with 2 reefs - a huge wave took hold of Firefly and another new record of 18.5 knots was set. The boat felt reasonably stable at this speed, not a great deal of vibration (as one would have expected) but was creating a lot of spray on either side of the hull

The wind has now dropped and we are experiencing a counter current (the first since Europe) so our progress has slowed but we are still hoping to get into an anchorage within the San Blas islands before dark tomorrow (Friday)
