Mustique - St. Awesome's Day 2013

Foreword By Becki
8 days ago, as we sailed out through the Cape Verde islands into a week of
no wind, the skipper decreed that the following Sunday would be a day of
great pleasure and awesomeness, centered around a huge Sunday roast and a
secret bottle of Cava that he had stashed away in the bilges.

The reason for this bold prediction was that we hoped to be hitting 44
degrees West on that particular day - the '1000 miles left' mark, and plus,
we could also feel in our sailor's bones that the wind would finally kick in
around then too. UGrib, our weather model also predicted the same thing,
which was useful as sailor's bones alone cannot be trusted for weather
routing.

Predicting a day of awesomeness can be a risky business and often leads to
disappointment and anti-climax. Our skipper, however, was right to be so
brave, as the week that followed his announcement of St. Awesome's Day was a
lonely one, with no sightings of any ships or boats for 4 days in a row and
our calls for company over channel 16 on the VHF radio were met with bitter
silence. We were truly on our own.
Hopefully this bleak picture (intermingled with sunbathing and fishing) will
give you an idea of why the crew of SY Mustique looked forward to the day of
awesomeness with such enthusiasm. After 2 weeks of life at sea, even a life
as wonderful as ours can start to seem repetitive and it is good to have the
hope of a good Sunday roast dangled in front of you. I will now pass you
over to Scott who, as the person responsible for our ridiculous over-use of
the word 'Awesome', will tell you what took place on St. Awesome's day 2013.

Fin's delicious, juicy Roast Lamb, all the trimmings, followed by Mince pies
& cream *courtesy of Rob*, while sailing at 8 knots in 15knots of WIND, mid
Atlantic.... Awesome just wouldn't do it justice.
