Millport II - Ted's Diary

Day 9: Mum and Dad said that they sailed through a line of squalls last night. They told me that they were really glad to have radar because they could sail the boat between them. There is not very much wind again today. We found another flying fish on the deck, it was only a baby one though.
Brazilian Chicken with sweet potato mash for dinner tonight.

Day 10: Last night Dad decided that we would go to Mindello in the Cape Verde Islands. There is still no wind and the forecast is for no wind for the next few days. Because we had not planned to go there, we had no courtesy flag so Mum, Robert and I made one. It was fun, we coloured in some paper, then glued some white and red strips and gold stars to it. We laminated the paper and Dad hoisted it up the mast, and it looks a bit strange like the wind is blowing it all the time.
In the afternoon we stopped the boat and everyone went for a swim. Then I caught another Mahi mahi. He was a bit small so we let him go. After that we arrived in Mindello and anchored for the night.
Chilli and nachos for dinner, I love nachos.

Day 11: We got up early and went to get some fuel. Jenne from Heckogecko was there. His dad helped us to moor, it was great to see them again.
After getting fuel we anchored beside our friends on Arkouda. Dad and I swam over to visit and Sean offered to take us into the town in his dinghy later on.
The town was very interesting. We went to see the police to get our boat papers and passports stamped. We had a lovely lunch in a cafe, very tasty chicken wings and chips. Everyone in the town was so friendly, I really liked it.
After dinner on our boat, Sean came over in the dinghy and we all went over to Arkouda for some drinks.
While we were there a little boat sailed past us looking for the marina. We realised that it was the Mini Transat racing boat, which we knew from radio reports, had suffered serious damage. Sean, Robert, Karen and I decided to help him out and give him a tow into the marina. I had to hold the torch to show the way because it was very dark and there are lots of other boats in the anchorage. We had to go quite slow in the dinghy but it was really exciting to be helping another person out. When we got to the marina we were able to talk to the sailor. He is called Francois and his boat number is 159. He looked really tired after so long at sea and said that he was looking forward to a hot shower and a good sleep.

Day 12: This morning we left Mindello. As we were getting ready, my friends on Starship arrived. I am really glad they are ok, I had heard on the radio that they had a problem with their boom. Before we left, Dad winched me up the mast to get the courtesy flag halyard which was stuck. We saw dolphins today and a Manx Shearwater flying along skimming the water with his wings. Dad thinks that we may have found the trade winds because we are sailing quite fast and the wind is coming from the right direction for once.
This evening after dinner we had to run the generator to make fresh water so I was allowed to watch a movie on Mum's computer and Robert could play the Wii. I love the generator.
