Edelweiss - Day #8: The butter has melted.....

.... and now we are just looking for the turn to St Lucia! We write you today from a HOT and sunny Atlantic (do you know how long we've waited to write "hot!?') We are sailing along in delightful 9-13 knots of wind, pushing us gently along (do you know how long we've waited to write "gently!?"). And, before we forget, "RABBIT RABBIT" and happy December to you!

The last 24-48 hours have been challenging as we worked our way through some heavy weather, the good ship Edelweiss carrying us well through 30+ knot winds and 3+ meter waves. All the time, we have been working our way south, eager to pass Cape Verde so that we can start to look for the trade winds which will carry us to St Lucia. We had some good entertainment in the big seas, however, watching teems of flying fish soaring out of our way. These odd creatures (neither fish nor bird) seem to zing out of the water, either alone or in a great group, fly without flapping what look to be their wings and then disappear into the next wave they encounter. They are very amusing to watch!

We were happy to sight (though only barely through the haze) the outline of the Cape Verde Islands yesterday. That felt like a big (nautical) milestone and to say it was a morale booster for all on Edelweiss is an understatement. On a good housekeeping note, we are now easy to spot, as the rails are sporting all our damp foul weather gear to dry in the sun.... whew!
