Firefly - Round Finisterre

Firefly passed Cabo Finisterre at 0610 CEST at about 7.5 knots in the long awaited North Easterly wind. Paul was on watch at the time enjoying sailing along in the starlight. Paul, Peter and Murray were all delighted to have reached this milestone.

Yesterday (Sat 5th) was light and sunny and from Vivero we were generally motor sailing. At 1600 the wind reached 8 knots from the stern quarter and up went the Gennaker for 3 hours as we ghosted along at 5 to 6 knots. Peter cooked up a potato and sausage casserole and as we ate we enjoyed a bottle of Devon beer (shared 3 ways)as the sun set and a few dolphins came to look at our big white, red and black sail. The wind dropped away with the light and overnight we motored on a glassy sea until the wind filled in from the NE at about 0500 today (Sun 6th).

Jonno and Caroline will be pleased to hear that their sextants came out on deck yesterday as Peter and Paul started preparing to take sights. We are going to use the forthcoming passage to the Canaries to complete our Yachtmaster Ocean qualifications.

With Capes Vilano, Finisterre and the often treacherous Costa da Morte in our wake we are zooming downwind in 15 knots of breeze, sunshine and have the kite back up. Firely is reaching speeds of over 8 knots and we have been discussing where to make our next port of call based on the promise of a good forecast all day today of the NE 3 to 4 continuing.

Our aim is to be in Lanzarote by Tuesday 15th and we plan to depart from Cascais, on the coast near Lisbon. The current plan is for one stop before Caiscais most probably in Figueira da Foz on Monday evening enabling us to reach Cascais a day or so later on.
