Thrilling Thursday morning start from Thursday Island
21st August 2008

This morning 1130 saw the start of Leg14 the 800 miles from Thursday Island to Darwin. It was a moment to be proud of. Our fleet of World ARC yachts powering along the town front in a robust 27 knot breeze in full sunshine, worries of impossible tidal streams, 2m standing waves and the ever present estuarine or saltwater crocodiles, prevalent in this area, temporarily forgotten – this was just fantastic sailing!

At the T.I. end of the start line, and representing the world’s media, Mark Bosun from the Torres News, in the committee boat, the earlier mentioned Keith, ex-Cleone crewmember Nicola Anderson and representing the yellow-shirts Clare.

45 seconds to go and the yachts powered up for the line, Leg 14 of World ARC was about to start, the flag lowered and with the “All Clear” announced on VHF77

Windflower were first across the line followed within seconds by Kealoha 8 then Chantelle. This was a spectacular start with all yachts on top form. Sometimes sailing is just so good, and this was one of those times.

Abandoning the committee boat role after the start, Keith’s 16ft “tinnie” came into its own, this one-speed aluminium dory became our chase-boat! The start team quickly caught up with the fleet then as yachts headed out into Normbanby Sound they finally gave up the chase. Disappearing into the distance yachts were a stunning sight.

Wishing everyone safe sailing and we are looking forward to sharing the pictures in Darwin!
