Gentle breeze for Leg 4 to Nazaré
13 June 2011

There was almost no wind in Figueira da Foz this morning, but with only a 35mile sail down the coast ahead of them today, the Rally Portugal fleet were happy to wait a few hours for conditions to pick up and it was decided to delay the start of Leg 4 to Nazaré from 0900 until midday.

It turned out to be a good decision, as a few hours later a light northerly breeze was blowing across the startline just off the coast of Figueira da Foz, and all thirteen yachts headed away with light winds from astern filling their sails.
The fleet set off on what turned out to be a fantastic day's sailing to Nazaré
As the afternoon progressed the winds stayed light, and the fleet enjoyed a leisurely sail towards their fourth stopover of the Rally, the small seaside resort of Nazaré. The largest boat in the fleet, Brizo, was the first boat to appear around the headland in Nazaré at about 1800 local time, making a spectacular sight with their bright green cruising chute glowing in the afternoon sun. Brizo was soon followed by the rest of the fleet, several flying coloured sails, and within a couple of hours all the fleet were safely berthed up in the Nazaré marina

Nazaré's beach, known as the 'best in Portugal'The one-night stop in Nazaré breaks up the sail down from Figueira towards Peniche, and allows the crews a chance to explore the quaint cobblestone backstreets of this sleepy town - famous for its fine beach - and head up on the funicular railway to the clifftop to watch the sunset from the lighthouse. Tomorrow morning the fleet have another short sail of 20 miles down the coast to Peniche, where they will be for a night before moving on again to Oeiras.
