Luna Quest - Monday, 6th April, 2015

Noon Position: 14.46S 146.55W

Daily run: 116 miles

We are passing through the Tuomoto Archipelago today skirting the Rangiroa atoll. With sunrise there were a number of squalls sitting on the horizon with one moving towards us. We had one reef in the mainsail and several rolls in the genoa when the squall struck with 28 knots of wind sending Luna Quest at 7.5 knots towards the Tuomotos. As our little ship tends to luff in a puff, I need to help the Hydrovane by hand steering. I did not have much on when the rain came down and as I had not had a body wash for several days, I thought a good rinse would do the trick, but Julia took the opportunity to chuck me up a soapy face cloth and with that I managed to lather myself never ceasing to steer the boat with my left foot on the helm. Then the rain stopped and the sun tried to come out and warm my chilled body. As soon as the wind abated, I went down into the heads (i.e. bathroom) to rinse to caking lather off.

The trouble with squalls is that it sends the boat in a different direction and once passed, leaves it wallowing in a chop with little or no wind, which is very hard on the gear.

Eric
