Makena - World Arc 15-16 Day 2: En route to Columbia

In our first 24 hours we put down 180+ miles which is a great rate. We have just family aboard now having said goodbye to the lovely Rikki and Chiara on the quay in St Lucia. Kai has all his grandparents aboard: Daniel, Francoise, and David. They are just rebuilding their sea legs this trip so we are trying to take things as easy as possible - right now we are flying just one sail and going with the waves for maximum comfort. For those more used to passage making this is a particularly pleasant one and people are reading, watching movies and just relaxing in the sun. Everyone has been together for all meals so that will tell you that the ‘mal de mer’ is not too bad. The waves are up to 3 meters and ‘plentiful' as my Dad says! They are non-threatening - helpful even!

During the first 24 hours Matt & Anais passed over 1000nm with us on Makena. Just at the start of the 2nd 24 hour period (212nm into the passage), Daniel and Francoise racked up their “mille miles marine”. Sarah’s Dad David passed this threshold 1.5 hours later… roughly! ;) Their miles come from various visits in France, Greece and this current one which started in the Caribbean. Francoise just cannot believe that she has done this in her 76th year after a lifetime of refusing to go out sailing with Daniel and Luc. The waters in northern Europe are not as welcoming especially not after a man aboard incident!

Tomorrow Charlie will cross his 2000nm with us on Makena. Of course Luc’s children Anais and Charlie have many more miles than this. Anais’ first sailing experiences where in the Mediterranean with sailing camps on a hobbie cat as a young girl. Then for the 14 years prior to Makena, the family had a Jeaneau 45 Sun Odyssey in San Francisco.

It will take a few days more but we are looking forward to arriving in the oldest city in South America: Santa Marta, Columbia.
