Celebrations & Farewells in Lagos

After three weeks of sailing and exploring the Portuguese coast, Wednesday evening marked the end of the 21st edition of ARC Portugal. Having sailed over 900 nautical miles and visited eight different ports, arrival to Marina de Lagos following “the best sailing day of the Rally” was a fitting way to end the sailing for the Rally.

“Good sailing, interesting ports, good company, well organised!” David – Degree of Latitude

Waiting for their arrival, some family and friends had traveled from the UK to welcome loved ones after following their progress as they sailed south on fleet viewer application. The achievement of arrival in the final port made for a fun atmosphere on the ARC Portugal pontoon.

The farewell evening included a three course dinner, prize giving and entertaining presentation that reminded the fleet of all they had achieved and experienced over the last three weeks. During the Rally, crews have shared a variety of experiences together including the sailing and social aspects. As a result, close friendships were formed making the evening an emotional time as many said their goodbyes before departing Lagos.

“A challenging experience and one that increases your confidence in boat and crew sailing skills.” Paul - Attachment

Some of the fleet plan to stay in Marina de Lagos using it as a base for their boats making it a warm and easy destination to fly to from the UK. Yacht Windborne is progressing well with their gearbox problems and expects to be in the water early next week before joining the remaining fleet in Marina de Lagos, whilst others will be venturing further afield including Peter and Nicky from Chanto who are crossing the Atlantic with the ARC this November, and Dawson and Eileen who are taking their Hanse 505 Isabella of Portsmouth to Malta.

"The friendships gained and mutual support were fantastic." Peter - Chanto
