A fantastic reception in Oeiras

What a fantastic reception the fleet have received in Oieras Marina. After crossing the finishing line which was marked from the edge of the marina breakwater to the lonesome fort on Farol do Torre, all yachts were approached by the marina rib and given a helpful marina map with berthing instructions.

Oeiras Marina is a great location for the rally. The facilities are of a high standard and the town centre is only a short walk away. Many crews have made use of the good rail links to Lisbon exploring the city by the traditional trams and tuk tuks.

Yesterday gave chance for crews to show off their artistic side, painting their ARC Portugal mural on the outer breakwater. Impressive entries from Spirit III, Infinity, Porcellum, Waterval and Zoonie yesterday has spurred many others to take the challenge today and leave their mark in Oeiras. A prize for the most creative mural will be awarded in the rallies next stopover in Sines.

Last night the fleet were hosted in the marinas boat yard where a traditional Portuguese barbecue of sardines and pork and local music were awaiting them. Once crews had filled their selves sufficiently words of thanks were given to marina staff and president of Oeiras Viva Rafael Salgueiro before moving onto the fun prize giving for Leg 6, Peniche to Oeiras.

In Class A Keith and Ali’s Beneteau First 405 Spirit III once again showed its talents by winning first in class however this time closely followed by Shiraz, a Bavaria 42 and Waterval, a Catalina 445. In Class B, Remedy of Mylor, a Fantasi 44 crewed by Tim, Niki and Dieter took first prize with Salmo Salar and Zoonie close behind. A few fun competition prizes followed as crews continued to enjoy their evening.

Today, the fleet have split with many going to explore the sights of Lisbon, some taking a tour to Sintra and Cascais and others choosing to have a leisurely day painting their murals, doing the laundry and provisioning before the start of leg 7 tomorrow morning, Oieras to Sines.
