Figueira da Foz and Sailing South

Following arrival in Figueira da Foz on Saturday, the fleet have enjoyed their time exploring and relaxing along this beautiful section of Portuguese coast. Arriving in quick succession, all 16 yachts were safely berthed by 1930 on Saturday in time for the welcome dinner at Clube Náutico. Unlimited freshly barbecued sardines, wine and home brewed port made for a great evening.

The following morning, most crews gathered for a tour to the town of Coimbra. An hour’s bus ride from Figueira through the country side of rice and corn fields, Coimbra houses one of the oldest universities in operation in the world and is the oldest in Portugal dating back to 1290. A tour of the university included their famous library. Following the tour, there was a chance to have a leisurely walk and lunch in Coimbra before leaving for Montemor Castle, built in 1088.

Last night the Mayor of Figueira da Foz welcomed the fleet to the town, hosting them in a beautiful grand manor house. It marked a special occasion for the 20th edition of ARC Portugal and gave chance for World Cruising Club to show thanks to the town for their support and hospitality over the last 20 years. The evening finished with a selection of finger food and wine in the houses grounds before taking a tour of the grand house.

This morning, there was a good 8-10 knot breeze to mark the beginning of leg 5, Figueira da Foz to Peniche. The 55nm sail had an impressive start with Hapatoni crossing the line first, closely followed by Salsus and Garretty. The fleet created a great spectacle as they sailed south of Figueira to Peniche where they will receive a warm welcome this evening.
