Figueira da Foz has been the home to ARC Portugal (formerly Rally Portugal) for the 21 years that World Cruising Club has been introducing sailors to the Portuguese coast. Due to the many years the rally has been visiting Figueira, ARC Portugal has a strong relationship with the community, yacht club and tourist authority with this year as no exception.
Yesterday crews enjoyed a tour to Montemor Castle and the city of Coimbra, famously known for its university. Coimbra dates back to the Roman Empire and was the first capital for 200 years during the reigns of the earliest monarchs where the profile of the city was raised by the founding of the University. Crews got chance to visit the practicing university including the impressive library which is intricately decorated with gold.
This morning, the fleet were welcomed to Figueira da Foz at the official Mayors residents which is undergoing a restoration project. The welcome included a tour of the house and kind words of welcome from Mayor João Ataíde and the Commodore of Club Nautico Figueria ds Foz Miguel Armaral, before enjoying wine and canapés on the courtyard lawn.
This afternoon is the fleets last day to explore Figuiera da Foz with many opting to relax on the large beach it boasts before setting sail tomorrow to the smaller fishing town of Peniche.
