Topic "Adelaïde to Perth" a message from Will Duiker
Australia

Bonjour Wilfred,
Many Australians have crossed "The Bight" both ways and it can be uncomfortable. We sailed East to West and were not accustomed to ocean crossings so waited for a large High Pressure down south of the Bight in February to have SE winds. We departed Fowlers Bay East of Ceduna and had bumpy conditions for our Trimaran - the SE winds had enough fetch to produce 2 m seas but the SW Swell of 2 - 3 meters intersected - like a washing machine. We stopped at Eucla for a front to go though - not much protection, then went on to Dawe Island - the other possibility is Isrealite Bay. We have crewed on a 15m Catamaran the other way in October and the seas were better as they were with us. The best guide for the Western Australian side is produced by the Fremantle Sailing Club.

Good luck

Will, SV Shanghaied

Topic "Which jacket should I buy?" a message from Jeremy Wyatt
United Kingdom
Ocean Dreamer

Hi Thierry.
Your clothing requirements will depend on where you are joining the boat. If sailing from northern Europe you will need underlayers and a good jacket & trousers. As you head south from Gran Canaria it does get warmer, so if you are only sailing the Atlantic, then a lightweight jacket will be OK. See the more detailed description in the ARC rally handbook section 02 page 45. You can read this via our website. See the links to events documents, lower left. Plus you can purchase items from GILL at a member's discount. See link on the member's pages, lower right.

best regards
Jeremy

Topic "Which jacket should I buy?" a message from Thierry Godin
France

Hello,

I'm preparing the ARC 2013. I'm wondering which type of jacket should I buy. I looked at several brands and models but I really don't know what would be a "good choice"! For example with Gill jackets, is the OS2 jacket sufficient or ARc weather conditions require the high-end OC1 jacket?

Any tip, recommendation? I guess the historic K.Way jacket is not the right choice ;-)

Thanks for any help,

Thierry

Topic "Around the world route - advices needed" a message from Joao Gomes
Macau

We are planning, for the next 4 years, an around the world voyage.
Our plan is to reach all the portuguese speaking countries, however, we have some details to solve!

Our boat, a 45 feet Gulfstar, is currently in Dominican Republic.

The initial idea was to sail down south to Brazil (which we need to abandon because won't be easy to reach Rio de Janeiro due to currents) then follow from Brazil to Europe via Cabo Verde.

However, probably will be wiser to head to Bahamas, Bermuda, Azores and Portugal.

Then African coast until Cabo Verde and Guine-Bissau.

We need to came to Brazil and then make the remaining countries in Africa, Angola and Sao Tome and Principe in the Atlantic side and Mozambique in the Indian Ocean side.

And in Brazil we need to go to Rio, Natal and Fortaleza!

What would be the easiest solution?

Cross from Angola to Rio? Similar to the same route coming from South Africa with stop in St Helena. Then in Brazil go up until Fortaleza and make the crossing back to African coast again and follow the same route down to South Africa?

As for the remaining, after Mozambique i don't have any doubts!

The only problem will really be Brazil.

Would appreciate some inputs from fellow sailors who may done some of this legs.
