The area covered by the Cruise includes the waters from the southern shore of Islay, the most southerly island in the Inner Hebrides, to the northwest of Skye. The islands of Mull, Iona and the Small Isles provide a multitude of anchorages along the way. Two weeks allows for a leisurely pace between distilleries, and some cruisers even take advantage of good weather by heading for the Outer Hebrides.
There are many delightful anchorages on the direct route from Oban to Loch Harport - Loch Spelve, Loch Aline, Tobermory, Loch Sunart and Loch Na Droma Buidhe, Loch Moidart, Arisaig, Loch Nevis, Isle Oronsay, Muck, Eigg, Rum and Canna are a few of them.
The west side of Mull offers Tinkers Hole, Iona, Bunessan, Loch Scridain, a stop at Staffa, Gometra, Ulva, The Tresnish Isles, Tiree and Coll. These suggestions are just a beginning; the choice is wide and varied and each stopping off point is different, with magnificent scenery even in the rain!
Some sailors return happily to their favourite spots, while newcomers to the West Coast will enjoy the sense of freedom that comes with unexplored territory. Help is at hand from Admiralty Charts, Clyde Cruising Club Sailing Directions, and of course from other cruisers who may be headed your way, but the greatest pleasure of the Cruise is always doing and discovering things for yourself.
Most people at some point find themselves attracted to Tobermory, Mull's lively little capital. Other than this, the distilleries themselves provide the "bright lights" on what is above all a chance to get away from it all in glorious natural surroundings and delightful company.
