OBAN
Oban distillery, founded in 1794, is at the heart of Oban - the "Gateway to the Isles". Fine single malt whisky has been made here for over 200 years in one of the oldest licensed distilleries, its stills among the smallest in Scotland. The attractive West Highland character of OBAN perfectly suits this location, revealing aspects of both the Highland and the Island styles. A richly peaty, fruity nose introduces a spicy, mouth-filling Highland sweetness, whilst the character of the Islands is revealed in a long drying finish with smoke and some salt.
Oban Distillery Stafford Street, Oban PA34 5NH Telephone 01631 572004 Open for tours throughout the Cruise, Monday to Friday 9.30am to 7.30pm, Saturday 9.30am to 5.00pm, Sunday 12.00pm to 5.00pm.
TALISKER
Talisker, the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, is home to a powerful malt of rare distinction. Here, lodged far from any neighbour in the small coastal community of Carbost at the head of Loch Harport, is one of the finest yet most remote distilleries of all. Since 1830, it has brought Skye’s proud spirit to the world. Its unchanging full-bodied character matches that of the famous Cuillin range, which dominates the distant view from the distillery. For one expert "This is not so much a drink as an experience - unquestionably one of the greatest whiskies in the world”. Talisker Distillery Carbost, Isle of Skye IV47 8SR Telephone 01478 614308 Open for tours throughout the Cruise, Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.00pm.
LAGAVULIN
LAGAVULIN is the definitive Islay malt, from the ancestral home of the Lords of the Isles who long ago ruled much of what became Scotland. Intense, dark Lagavulin (pronounced Lagga-voolin - after the Gaelic Laggan Mhouillin, “the hollow where the mill is”) has been made by the shores of this historic bay overlooking ruined Dunyvaig Castle at least since 1816. The reputation of LAGAVULIN as the most outstanding of the Islays is truly justified. At 16 years of age, it is a potent yet wonderfully rounded pleasure full of "awesome power and marvellous complexity of flavours" and acclaimed by writer Jane MacQuitty as "gloriously rich, smoky, iodine-scented”. Lagavulin Distillery Port Ellen, Isle of Islay PA42 7DZ Telephone 01496 302400 Open for tours throughout the Cruise, Monday to Friday by appointment. Please telephone to arrange.
