Makena - Nov 23 - PW Reporting

November 23, 2014
Onboard Makena, Lagoon 620 crossing the Atlantic

Noon position:
16.39.0N
337.10.9W

Squalls to the left of us, squalls to the right...
We hoisted Tequila Sunrise at sunrise and flew with her as we made course slightly north of the rhumb line. When the squalls threatened us, all hands to bring her back down. 20 minutes later, back up she went. We were close to our fellow multihulls and wanted to make some good time down the track. This procedure of hoisting and lowering the spinnaker is not a very conservative method, but it worked. By the afternoon position we had pulled into the leading position. We do have one monhull, Eleanora 2, still ahead of us by 13 miles.

The day continued with constant squalls hitting us. Oftentimes, they would pass just north or south. We tried to stay a couple of miles outside the brunt of the squall and follow the line of stronger wind along. We had a couple of rides that lasted for over an hour, right at the limit of wind for the spinnaker.

Ono en papaillotes for dinner. Thick medallions of Wahoo with scallions on top, onions below, wrapped in parchment paper and cooked in their juices in the over. Oh so good. Sides of lentils and fresh spinach .Dinner was caught by Luc, orchestrated by Sarah, rolled "en papilliotes" by Riki and Philippe. I tried my hand at whipping up some cream for dessert and ended up failing miserably. The end result was a separation of whipped butter and watery milk.

New feature in the blog: Crew of the day!
Meet Riki. 31 year old Riccardo Miglia, has the fewest hours sailing of any of the crew (this includes baby Kai). What Riki lacks in sailing time, he more than makes up for in his beaming personality, hearty laugh and , of course, that chiseled surfer body. In 2010, while living in the Canary Islands, he had an invitation to sail to Rio de Janiero. It didn't work out, however, the plan was set in motion.

Riki is from Torino, Italy, currently living in Diano Marina, Liguria, Italy. He often splits his time between teaching skiing and snowboarding in the winter and swim instructor and lifeguard in the summer. That is when he is not pulled away on one of his many worldwide adventures. Biking through Europe, surfing in Indonesia, 8 months in Australia, 4 months in Brazil and a quick stint in Sri Lanka are a few of the highlights of Riki's travel.

Always near and in the water, surfing or swimming, Riki new that he had to fulfill that goal of an ocean crossing. Riki is constantly cleaning, prepping and cooking, in addition to standing his watches. He has come a long way in his sailing experience and his outgoing, charismatic personality makes him the perfect crew. By the way, Riki is already thinking about his Pacific and Indian Ocean adventures to come.
