Makena - Nov 13 PW Reporting

November 13, 2014

Life onboard the Lagoon 620, Makena

Today, like all the rest, started with a gorgeous sunrise. A few clouds on either side of the sun with the bright orb climbing quickly between them. Sunrise and sunset have become significant placemarks in our day. As with the previous daybreaks we have set more sail.

We made over 180 miles yesterday, with solid wind throughout the day. Slightly less pressure today. We began with the gennaker and staysail wing and wing and a full mainsail. The GRIB files show that we should make a course slightly to the west of the rhumb line.

After a few housekeeping chores the crew settled into more introspective time. Books came out and napping on the upper deck were de rigeur. We have passed the 2/3 mark and are homing in on the arrival in Cape Verde.

For lunch, Riki whipped up some guacamole to go with the daily salad. Our fruits and veggies have not been holding up too well, so we have made sure to eat them before they turn.

We caught our first fish today. Blasting along at 9 knots with two fish hooked up, it can be tough to bring them in. These were small dorado and we actually had them reeled in before we could drop gennaker. Luc was working really hard for the fish. He changed lures a couple of times throughout the day and experimented with distance of the lure behind the boat. When we hooked up, didn't seem to matter, one lure close and one lure far behind. Two different colors, too.

Needless to say, fish was on the menu for dinner tonight preempting the dish that had been simmering in the galley. Sarah cooked up slices of eggplant, zuccini, asparagus and carrots, while I grilled the fish and onions on the barbeque. Wine for the day was a 2010 Azpilicueta Rioja. For dessert we had bananas flambe, again. Those who have gone offshore with lots of bananas know that all of the bananas are talking to each other and decide to go ripe at exactly the same time. Well, to quell the complaints about bananas flambe, again, we topped the plates off with pistachio ice cream. All is very good aboard Makena.
