Persistent Lady - Sunday June 15, 2014

Well, it’s overcast again today. Pretty much ever since we installed the solar panels that Kris and D sent us the sun has been hiding. The one day we had full sun, we went 17 hours between charges, which is almost double our average, so we know they work well, just need the sun. Kris and D did a great job of picking out all the small incidental things we needed to install the panels, we literally just opened the box and took out the things we needed, everything was there. THANKS, Kris and D!!!

It is a brisk day in shorts and tee shirt; yesterday I was in long johns, sweatshirt and jacket for my 10:00 PM to 3:00 AM watch, but I was not feeling well, alternately freezing and then too warm and a headache. No interest in eating, did not even try the lemon pie. This morning, I feel much better and am looking forward to the pie and the green wine with dinner. We only bought one green wine (dumb, we like it, should have bought several). The green wine is an Azorean thing, it is a white wine that is slightly sparkling and very refreshing. We tried it at a restaurant as a lark and were pleasantly surprised. Jake threw it in the fridge yesterday and it will be great with the leftovers tonight.

Sherrin is making snickerdoodle cookies this morning and we will have them for snacks for the next two days or so. For brunch today we will have French toast, bacon, eggs and coffee. The pain de mie bread she makes is perfect for French toast.

We are sailing a broad reach at 89 degrees, directly into the straits of Gibraltar, about 450 miles away. Usually, the boat will sail herself, just set the course, tweak the sails and set back and watch her sail; today the wind is gusty and we are using the autopilot. At 5 knots, which we are averaging and is also the speed I always use in my planning, we will enter the straights in 90 hours. I took those readings this morning at noon, so we expect to enter the straits Thursday sometime. The grib files we just got show the wind moderating Monday and Tuesday. Chris Parker said we would be motoring the last two hundred miles, so it may be late Thursday or early Friday before we enter the straits.

When we are settled for a day or so at Gibraltar I will go onto our website, (jimandsherrin.com) and update the info and start using it for our blogs and pictures. The site is old and has not been updated in a year or two, it was last updated while we were still looking for a boat. All that stuff will be deleted and we will make that our main communications site in the future. We do plan on taking a ferry to Morocco from Gibraltar, so may wait till we get to Spain to update the website, don’t want to make work out of it.
JIM
