Sailing through the Finnish archipelago

After departure from Helsinki in the spectacle of a parade of sail, the ARC Baltic fleet set sail to enjoy the beautiful Finish archipelago. Sailing through the many islands, the narrow channels and passages allowed crews to explore the unspoiled nature and many hidden and private anchorages en-route, of which there are plentiful.

A sight to see, the archipelago is made up of thousands of islands mostly covered in trees or bare rocks. The navigation can be challenging, however with the option of well buoyed channels or unmarked routes the fleet could explore at their own pace, interacting with the many local boats who often sail to their private cabins during the summer season.

Once in the Åland archipelago, many decided to anchor in one of the recommended anchorages provided by the rally team on the small island of Kökar. Whilst there, some opted to rent bikes and discover the sights of the island whilst the weather continued to shine fondly on the fleet, helping people make the most of their time. After five weeks of sailing together, crews have got to know one another well with examples of yachts Barkas, Persuasion and Tenace rafting together in the secluded anchorage before inviting others for sundowners.

After three nights in the archipelago the next stopover on the rally itinerary was Mariehamn, Åland hosted by the ÅSS Marina. Two nights berthed in the small town, crews got to enjoy a visit to the Museum ship Pommern, the world’s only largest sailing vessel that has been maintained in its original state, and the Maritime Museum before competing in a fun cocktail competition on the pontoon as the sunset.

Following departure from Mariehamn, the fleet sailed 80 nautical miles to the KSSS Marina, Saltsjöbaden. There crews once again received a warm and hospitable welcome, spending time visiting the impressive Wasa Museum and Stockholm City Center.

A relaxed departure from Stockholm due to a free cruising period of six days means the fleet are now enjoying their last sail of the rally before arriving in Kalmar, Sweden on Friday or Saturday this week. Being the last stop of their six week rally of the Baltic, the fleet can enjoy a guided tour of Kalmar Castle followed by a farewell dinner allowing the chance to say goodbye to their fellow rally participants.
