Into the Pacific for the last time

16 yachts from the World ARC fleet are heading out into the Pacific Ocean for the last time as they commence Leg 7, Port Vila, Vanuatu to Mackay, Australia. The start line was between the Port and Starboard lateral markers across the entrance of Port Vila Bay and a 15 knot easterly made for a brisk downwind start. With expectation the winds could build there were no coloured sails however the fleet still looked resplendant with large genoas poled out and a number of twin headsail sail plans.

Firefly, a Humphries 42, was across the line first however it was only seconds before they were overtaken by Garlix, an XP44, who were fully powered up and making great spead out into Mele Bay and the Pacific beyond. A good start was also had by Discovery 55, Brizo, Makena a Lagoon 62 and Juno an Oyster 575 who were hot on the heals of the two lead yachts. A quick look at the fleet viewer early this afternoon proves the fleet are flying and it certainly is going to be a fast leg, Juno is now in the lead heading for an arrival in Mackay early next week.

Over the next 72 hours the fleet may experiece some unsettled conditions as they enter into a zone of tropical disturbance north of New Calendonia however by Saturday evening the South Easterly trades should be well establish at around 20 kts for the remainder of the leg.

The fleet now head west across the Pacific Ocean towards Mackay, Australia. The course directs the boats to a waypoint north of New Caledonia to keep clear of the D’Entrecasteaux atoll and then onto the finish line which is at the entrance to the Hydrographers Passage. This is a big shipping lane which provides a safe way through Australia’s Great Barrier Reef before making landfall at Mackay Marina in Mackay Harbour.

The start line boat today was kindly provided by Yachting World Vanuatu which were the fleets host here in Port Vila. Thanks to everyone involved in another great stopover and bon voyage to the World ARC fleet!
