Luna Quest - Monday, 25 May, 2015

Noon Position: 17.29S 171.31W

Daily run: 108 measured miles

The two foresails performed beautifully overnight giving us hope that we might make landfall on Tuesday late afternoon. However, this morning a large slow-moving squall has been shadowing us from breakfast time gradually forcing the boat on a more southerly course when at lunchtime it began to rain. Another squall on the near horizon is awaiting its turn to attack us. The seas are very disturbed as a result of the many squalls that dominate this sea area. After a squall has passed, the wind passes with it leaving Luna Quest pitching and rolling uncontrolled with the sails banging and everything on the move inside the boat. We are here for our pleasure...

The portable Honda generator is a godsend. Whereas on our passage from the Galapagos to the French Marquesas, when we did not have a portable generator, the solar panels did all the work required, the lack of sunshine since Tahiti has made an alternative power source imperative. The skies are more often overcast than not and where we now are we seem to have low hanging clouds only. The charging unit that sits between the H. generator and the ships’s batteries is a Merlin 12v 30A charge unit. After half an hour of charging, it get very warm, but after an hour it is hot. It appears fitted with a fan, but that does seem to come on. We are concerned about it, for without power, we have no communication and no navigation equipment.
