Karma Wins - Blog 5 The Third Leg

Having just finished writing the last blog we had another visit from the dolphin/whales. We think they were probably pilot whales as they showed no interest in Karma Wins, dolphins usually come and play. They went past leaping in the air and surfing the waves but not close enough to get a good sight of them. It was a lovely way to end the day.

We have discovered the reason we haven’t caught any fish. I reel it in at night so if we have to do any manoeuvres it doesn’t get in the way and this time I realised the hook has gone! The supply of flying fish has also dried up as the sea is so much calmer they manage to miss the deck.

Yesterday, having had a peaceful night sailing along at 3-6 knots, Barry decided it was time for the main. The genaker furls in really badly so we had to drop her on the deck whilst we put up the main and then Per has to hang on the sheet to get her to unravel. When we dropped the main at dusk Per spotted that the pin in the shackle on the main halyard block (for hoisting the main and holding it up) was halfway out. Once again we have been really lucky. We have been doing about 120 miles a day but still have 500-600 to go. We all had peaceful shifts last night under clear starlit skies.

We have just put the main up again and Karma Wins is skipping along at 6-8 knots in 10-14 knot winds. It is a bit overcast but it was a colourful dawn and the sun is peeping through the clouds.

We ate the last potatoes and carrots last night so now we are onto tins. The cabbage is still surviving; it lasts so well as long as I peel the leaves rather than cut into it. The peeled leaves also make a good alternative to bread in sandwiches! The new loaf of bread doesn’t look too exciting, I was tired when I made it, that’s my excuse and anyone who complains delegates themselves as bakers or they have to eat cabbage sandwiches!
Dawn, the dishwashing liquid, tried one more trick when the sea was choppy. If the top wasn’t on properly she’d blow little bubbles into the saucepans. She is now half empty and can’t do it anymore. We are about to let out the fishing line with a hook, so fingers crossed.

All the best Chrissy
