Exody - Day 13- November 22nd - Poled Out

I finally overcame my stage (or foredeck) fright today and we used the quiet conditions to set up the poled out genoa - for the very first time in four years of ownership. Crew reading plans were disrupted to help rig all the necessary guys etc. As someone said on the radio net this morning, the wind direction is UYA - Up Your ...... We also tried flying a loose luffed yankee and that seemed to work too so we are now all set for that particular wind direction! Hopefully this will enable us to stow the main in due course but for now we are working with prevented main and poled genny and doing reasonably at 6 knots in 13.5 knots of breeze just off the rear quarter - the Aries steering gear seems to have a good 'eye' for gybe avoidance.

We woke to one other boat in close proximity this morning - worked out it must have been Ayama from the noon positions. We are one of about a dozen boats with circa 1650 miles to St Lucia- a noon to noon run on this third day for us of 139 miles.

Wildlife experiences - more kamikaze flying fish landing on deck and surprising the mate when on early morning watch and two petrels circling repeatedly at close quarters this evening.

Otherwise not much to report - can't say it more concisely or aptly than Calista's teeshirts - 'Eat Sleep Sail Repeat' !
