Agua Dulce - Light winds - no fish - good food

Not much has been happening out here in the big, blue ocean. We have had light winds, but fairly steady, until yesterday when they all but died. I think we jinxed it, because someone thought it would be a good idea to have a contest to see who could guess most accurately when we would have to turn the engine on - we haven't had to use it (other than to enter Town Cut at St. George's harbor in Bermuda) for 1200nm. So, of course we all placed our bets, and in less than 24 hours, we were running the engine. Guess who won? Captain Charlie. The man whose ultimate decision it was to turn the engine on. Hmmmmm..... Anyway, with 1200nm to go, I guess we had to do something if we want to get to the Azores before Christmas.

We have caught no fish. Nothing is even interested. We've tried a variety of lures, but I think the fish are all on a diet. So, we had canned tuna for lunch instead. Speaking of food, since the winds have been so light and the seas so easy, we've been cooking a lot. We've had a pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and green beans courtesy of Bill, homemade fried rice courtesy of Jim, and Portugese sausage stew courtesy of Gretchen. We're all wondering what Charles is going to cook for us and wondering if we'll actually want to eat it. Sloppy Joes with quinoa, rice and peas are on the menu for tonight. I still have 9 meals frozen and ready to go if the weather gets sloppy. In the meantime, cooking is a good diversion and heartily appreciated by the crew.

We're all doing a lot of reading, catnapping and contemplating life while staring off into the water which is an amazing shade of blue. We've been visited by dolphins twice but only for a few minutes. These are smaller than the ones I've seen of the east coast, and they are speckled with white bellies.

Looking forward to some wind and picking up a little speed.
