Persistent Lady - New Yoek Is Behind Us Now

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Well, New York is behind us, and the adventure has begun.  Liberty Landing Marina in NY Harbor is truly one of the nicest experiences we have had and we thoroughly enjoyed our year there.  All the people were great and the marina itself was outstanding.

We left Saturday and set sail for Portsmouth VA.  Our weather router, Chris Parker, said we should expect about a day of 30-35 knot winds, preceded by and followed by light air.  He was right.  We had some tough weather, and we had an issue with the sheets being caught in the dinghy lashing, so we had to motor through the weather; definitely not a good way to go, but we survived and even had a glorious sail after the conditions abated enough to send Jake forward to free the lines.  It was a good test of the jack lines and they worked well.  He was able to stay connected the entire time.

Motoring through the channel into the Chesapeake and down to Ocean Yacht Marine Center in the dark was a challenge; there are a million lights and finding the particular one you are looking for is difficult.  We only had one misstep, ended up in 10 feet of water but was able to back out and get back into the channel and try again.  Got in about 10:00 PM and got a good night’s sleep.  Spent the day washing down the boat and sorting out the interior – oh, did I not mention that a few drawers came flying out in the rough weather?  It will be tomorrow before we are ship shape again, but all is well and we learned a few things.

Tomorrow we will get busy and start the few remaining items we need to get done before departure. It is beautiful this afternoon in Portsmouth, warm, sunny and beautiful. We counted four aircraft carriers in for maintenance along with several other naval ships.  Pretty noisy during the day as two of the carriers are berthed directly across the river from us; luckily, they shut down at 4:00 in the afternoon. Andreas and Jake are out in the dinghy exploring, Sherrin and I are in the cockpit enjoying a beer, and all is well.
