ARC Europe - Safety

Safety

Satellite Tracking
All ARC Europe yachts will be fitted with a Yellowbrick Iridium tracking device, which will automatically upload the yacht’s position to our online Fleet Viewer. Your family and friends back home will be able to view your position on the ARC Europe website, and we can monitor the progress of yachts at all times.

In addition, we organise a daily SSB radio net which keeps the fleet in touch and provides an opportunity to share experiences.

Splendido (USA) Beneteau 57, ARC Europe 2010: It's been fun to be part of this international community of sailors, and now that we have gotten to know the other crews better, we are looking forward to our twice daily SSB radio nets.”

Preparations & Training

Good preparation is essential for a safe trip. Because ARC Europe may be the first time a yacht and crew have been tested at sea, we have a qualifying cruise requirement of 500nm. We also expect the skipper and at least one crew to have undertaken a minimum level of training and certain safety and communications equipment must be carried. See the conditions of entry for full details.

World Cruising Club organises a series of seminars and training courses to help skippers and crews prepare for the rally.

In the UK, our training partner, Hamble School of Yachting, can also assist with a variety of training courses.

In the USA, we recommend the Ocean Cruising Seminars run by Cruising Rally Association and sea survival training promoted via US Sailing

Skipper’s Handbook and Briefings

Before each departure our World Cruising Club team will give a skippers’ briefing covering departure regulations, the start and fun competition, tips on passage planning and the weather expected en route.
Whimbrel II     In addition, each skipper will be supplied with a Skippers Handbook in hardback and pdf versions. This covers all aspects of preparing for and undertaking an Atlantic crossing, and is a distillation of our more than 25 years experience in running ocean rallies. The Handbook covers everything from selecting your crew, what to wear, recommended reading, provisioning, personal health, visas, selection of safety equipment and tips on preparing your boat. We also provide passage notes for each leg and detail on each destination, information on the weather you are likely to encounter and the best ways of receiving weather information (in addition to our free daily weather forecasts); and we provide advice on selecting communications equipment for your voyage.

Each participating yacht is required to carry certain safety and communications equipment as specified in the Conditions of Entry. These include:
