American Spirit II - Day 436; Snorkeling at Coconut Beach & a Party at the Grenada Yacht Club; Wednesday, March 18, 2015

One year ago today:

"Day 74; Rainbows, Speed Explained, Remora, Mixed Waves & Special Dinner; Tuesday, March 18, 2014. The day started poorly. At 4:00 AM Joel wanted to jibe jib and pole over. Decided not to. Too difficult to do in the dark, and no hurry to do so anyway. Middle of my night. Woke up for good at 6:20 AM because full moon was perfectly positioned on starboard bow to shine thru my aft cabin porthole right into my eyes. Like a spotlight in your face.
Before assuming morning watch duties from Mike, my daily routine includes shaving, even when its rough out. Then boiling the kettle to make hot water for a cup of coffee. Have to have that first cup in the morning."

******************************

Up at 6:45 AM. Joel was next at 8:30 AM, followed by Heidi at 8:45 AM. We went to the marina restaurant for breakfast. I had an 'English breakfast' that consisted of eggs; bacon; baked beans; french fries; toast; and orange juice. Joel had a yogurt dish;and I'm not sure what Heidi had.

After hanging around in the restaurant for a couple of hours, we finally decided to go to Coconut Beach mid afternoon. Brian from Folie a Deux drove us there in their new dingy. Joel elected to not stay with Heidi and myself and instead went back to the marina to help Tim on Folie fix an oil leak problem in his starboard engine.

At the beach Heidi and I snorkeled twice. On the first snorkel Heidi saw two eels, cream in color with brown spots; and about 18 inches long. They can be mistaken for sea snakes, but they aren't as there are no sea snakes in the Caribbean. Joel snorkeled for a few minutes on his way back to the marina and also saw one eel. Unfortunately, Heidi and I forgot to bring our underwater cameras with us for the first snorkel so we didn't get any underwater pictures of the eels. Heidi swims like a fish, just like her dad. She goes deep and can hold her breath for a long time. Impressive. Also at the beach were Russ, Laurie and Finn from Nexus; Frank and Woody from Chicka-lu; and Edward and Amelia from Adela. Frank and Woody from Chicka-lu drove us back to the marina in their dingy at 4:40 PM.

Joel was done working on Folie by the time we got back; and then we all took showers. There was a traffic jam in the men's shower room, so it took a little longer than expected.

At 6:45 PM Jon from Polaris drove us in Polaris' dingy to the Grenada Yacht Club, about a 5 minute dingy ride away.

At the yacht club, there was an open bar and finger food was served, buffet style. At around 7:00 PM Paul Tetlow from the World Cruising Club grabbed a micro phone and introduced representatives from the yacht club and the Marine and Yachting Association of Grenada (MAYAG). The commodore of the yacht club was given a Rally flag singed by all the boats; and the representative from MAYAG was given a smaller picture frame plaque representing all the countries and boats.

During the party I met a gentleman named George Grant, President and CEO of a local radio station, Grant Communications. He interviewed me using a sophisticated recording device; and said that his interview with me will be aired between 9:30 AM and noon this Sunday, March 22nd. I think there is a way to access the interview via the internet, and I'll endeavor to do so and then put the link in my log when I have it.

We were driven back to the marina by Roger from Free&BrEasy in his rental car; at around 8:45 PM. Then Joel and I watched the movie 'Heartbreak Ridge,' a Clint Eastwood movie about the invasion of Grenada. Heidi wasn't interested and read in bed for a while. Joel went to bed at 11:00 PM and I followed at 1:00 AM after typing two logs.

Tomorrow we're planning on renting a car and driving to a rain forest to take a hike to see 7 waterfalls.
